Garrett Vetsk
Garrett Vetsk is a former merchant sailor who once owned a ship and ran a small-scale cargo shipping business. However, his business was run out of operation by the Waterpike Company, a monopolizing company that may have been given exclusive rights by the previous mayor of Whiteharbor. Forced to work for the Waterpike Company, Garrett lived with his family in the company town of Pikeston in Whiteharbor. The town was owned and administered by the Waterpike Company, and the administrator(s) were cruel and malicious.
Garrett's family included a daughter named Aurora who was around 8 to 10 years old and an infirmed wife named Natalia. When a deadly storm hit, the Waterpike Company threatened to evict the family unless Garrett sailed his ship out into the storm. Tragically, the ship went down, and Garrett was brought back from the brink of death by The Deep One, who saw some hidden potential in him. The Deep One offered Garrett a pact: the power to get revenge on the Waterpike Company and regain his life, in exchange for damning more souls to a watery grave.
Garrett accepted the pact, and when he awoke, he discovered that nine years had passed. He was left to be rescued by a passing ship, but was instructed by The Deep One to demonstrate his commitment to the pact by sinking the rescuers. Despite this, his family was evicted from Pikeston due to the loss of employment and was presumed dead. Aurora went missing, and Natalia died in a construction accident after Garrett went missing. Unable to bring himself to return home given what he had done, Garrett sought revenge on the administrator(s) of the Waterpike Company, Thorbert and Wendel Waterpike. He encountered Satyr poachers near Eastmere, took down the operation, freed the captives, and killed the leaders, gaining some minor notoriety in the process. This notoriety led him to be contacted by Udurth.
Garrett is torn between fear of and loyalty to The Deep One. He is ashamed of making the pact with the being in a vengeful fury and believes himself to be too far gone to be redeemed. Even if redemption were possible, he fears how The Deep One would punish him and those he cares for if he were to refuse cooperation. Despite this, Garrett wants to put right the injustices imposed by those in power, such as ruling classes, companies, and organizations.
