Kathlam Desert
The Vast desert of Kathlam stretches as far as the eye can see, it's only reprieve are the small bastions of civilization that still cling to life, from humble oasis communities, the wandering Karith Tribes, Moon Drop Farms, to the majestic mage cities who's greatness can be witnessed as great beacons across the desert sands.
Though to wander the blistering sands is no small feat, it has many dangers beyond just the scorching sun, and brutal sandstorms, no the legacy of the old mage lords of Kathlam still roam the sands, from the savage Sjeri, the hulking Rakaja but to mention a few, and all manner of ancient sentinels, the old contructs that still watch over forgotten ruins and buried treasures. Indeed to traverse the great desert one must come prepared and know the paths that stay clear of such dangers.
Most who seek to travel in Kathlam do so by the great Nitea River, as the safest and fastest means, indeed most of the region is dependent on this great river, for food, transport and religious purposes, thus those who control the Nitea, control Kathlam.
Past Buried in the sands
Though the nature what was before the great catastrophe is unknown, the great ruins that lie burred in the sands tell of great empire, magnificent sprawling metropolises lay buried and in ruin all around in the old lands of Kathlam and many make a living salvaging both simple text and cultural artifacts aswell as powerful magical items from these ruins. Though such work is filled with peril, such people are often referred to as Dune Striders or simple Striders. The Great Mage cities
The Greatest of those who survived the ruin of Kathlam, either build or preserved their holdings, they became the Mage Lords of Kathlam, rulers who through their great arcane knowledge managed to retain the torch of civilization against the ever growing sands, against the roving hordes of old beast armies. They united the desperate stragglers of the land and remade it in their own image. Those cities are still ruled by their descendants, practicing and honing their craft like their forefathers, indeed magic has often been all that stood between the Kathara and total devastation. In These lands if one wants to climb the latter, one must either be practitioner of the arcane, for only through such power can one truly hold authority, for the Kathara know the power of the arcane, they know it can give and take life, or one must associate oneself with it's practitioners, for in the end, they are human too, with all the same needs, and the seem dependency on loyal retainers to ensure their rule and good peddlers to ensure their reagents never run out.The Wandering Sons
On the other hand one will find the Karith, nomadic tribes that traverse the dunes with only the strength of their own hands, for their ancestors were barred from the great cities in times of old, and they have never forgotten that it was magic that destroyed the fertile plains of Kathlam, many of these tribes are incredibly hostile to the Kathara. But most seek to share in their goods, for without the cities most of the Karith would not be, they are dependent on their wares and water, and thus seek amicable relations, though they still scorn magic, they at least see the necessity of good relations and the shared threat of the beast hordes.Natural Resources
A unique phenomenon to the desert is the creation of Moon Drops, crystallized magical energies, the exact reason for their creation is unknown, but for as long the the people of this land remember, they have sought after the control of this precious resource, for it is completely invaluable in the creation of golems and many other magical tools, and used by wizards to increase their power for a short duration.
