Talinessee, former Golden Empire of

Talinessee is an ancient civilisation based on the north-western coast on the continent of Hadean.   The first people known as the Talin permanently settled the area of the future Talinessee Empire some 3,000 years ago.   There is speculation they were descendents of people who had been forcibly exiled from their southern homelands during the climax of the Alin-Carkade war. The origin myths of the Talinessee depict the survivors of an unnamed land at the very soutehrn edge of Hadean wandering the devastated continent of Hadean for 3,000 years before settling in the lush lands on the north-west coast.   Talinessee emerged as a major regional power 1,200 years ago initially establishing a kingdom that incorporated all the peoples of Talin, before exopanding over the centuries following to form the Golden Empire of the Talinessee. At it's height, the Golden Empire was a military, economic, arcane and social juggeranaut that dominated the region.   Much of it's growth was achieved by (relatively) peaceful means, with many other people, human and non-human, joining the empire. Under a few Emperors there were periods of expansion based on military conquest, but largely the Golden Empire grew within a stated "co-prosperity sphere".   The most dangerous major military opponent over the years that the Talinessee faced were the nomadic peoples of the Pasishta steppes and the mysterious forces of Gorgongosa. In the 900 years between the birth of empire and the emergence of the united Helegu Khaganate, the borders of Talinessee expanded and contracted depending on the relative strength of the Talinessee empire compared to the strength of the Pasishta steppe people. At its height, according to the Great University, the Golden Empire of Talinessee enjoyed a "standard of living far superior to that of any other contemporary Hadean society."   At the time of the Helegu invasions, the Talinessee were broken into a smaller northern and western dynasties, and a larger and more powerful southern empire.   After a 100 year slogging match, the former Golden Empire of the Talinessee were entirely conquered by the Helegu. In 200 years of subjegation, there have been 10 formally recognised (by the Great University) rebellions against the Helegu rulers. The most recent rebellion encompasses the cities of the Zoc Merr highlands, where the Helegu were expelled 20 years ago and to date have been succesfully repelled the efforts of the Blue Host to reconquer them.

The same Great University scholars estimate that 300 years ago the Talinessee Empire supported in excess of 100 million people of all races. As of today that number is less than 75 million.

History

When the Helegu conquest of the eastern Talin empire started, there were multiple raids. When the Helegu invaded the northern Talin territory in 1160, Talin traitors supported the Helegu and showed them a safe road to the northern Talin dynasty's heartland. The first important battle between the Helegu and the northern Talin dynasty was the Battle of Arkarao at a mountain pass near Zalasseth which took place in 1162. There the northern Talin field commander, made a tactical mistake in not attacking the Talin at the first opportunity. Instead, he sent a messenger to the Helegu side, Sanda Gith, who promptly defected and told the Helegu that the northern Talin army was waiting on the other side of the pass. At this engagement, the Helegu enveloped the Talin and massacred thousands of Talin troops. The northern Talin general Norma Ical declared his allegiance to the Helegu in 1170 and conquered northern Talin for the Helegu.   In 1252 when the Helegu led army besieged the southern Talin capital, Terminand Zand the Talin generals assembled a militia who who inflicted several defeats on the Helegu. Soon enough the Helegu smashed the remaining Talin armies, each numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and broke through to sack the land surrounding the capital. The Helegu surrounded the court of the last Golden Talin Emperor.
After a 3 year siege, the Helegu broke through at great cost to all sides and thoroughly sacked the city
