Shogunate of Kazanshiro

The northern region of Kizudo, vast mountain ranges ruled by various samurai clans founded by Giants. Known for it's earth magic, smithing and works of artifice such as robotic soldiers and trains. Many here follow a code of honor and passion.

Geography

Kazanshiro is very mountainous, full of steep mountains and valleys. All but the northernmost areas are covered in forests, temperate deciduous in the south and boreal throughout the center. The northernmost areas are covered in tundras, bitingly cold and devoid of all but the toughest life. Rivers from snowmelt flow down from the peaks of the Kazan mountain range down into the valley and south into the Wastes. Many of the mountains in the Kazan chain are volcanic, some more active than others, Mount Akuta notably erupted, wiping the town of Konda off the map. Volcanic activity also helps some areas stay liveable through geothermally heated bodies of water and rich soil caused by lava. Outside of these areas much of Kazanshiro is very sparsely populated, as the ground is permafrosted and there are many natural hazards. Muskegs and geysers are particularly dangerous. Muskegs are hidden peat bogs covered by grass or moss that are much less solid than the areas around it, and can go very deep underground. If you're lucky you can find your way from a muskeg into the Underdark, but most will just drown or break their legs.

Ecosystem

Much of the soil of the area is very rich, but the harsh seasons make growing things difficult.
The Skirts (Southern Forests): They are temperate deciduous forests, with broad leafed trees such as Maple, Oak and Bamboo. There is a huge variety of mundane animals such as cranes, Red panda, Sable, Silka Deer, Leopards, Siberian Tigers, Lynxes, Otters, Gorals, Musk Deer, Red Deer, Asiatic Black Bears, Giant Pandas and Wolves. There are also many monsters throughout the area that feast on the animals and mortals. Hill Giants are common in this area, the lowest of the true giants known for their hunger.
The Belt (Central Forests): Boreal throughout the center. The forests of the taiga are largely coniferous, dominated by larch, spruce, fir and pine. On the borderlands between the Belt and the Skirt there are closed canopy mixed forests, partially coniferous partially deciduous. They are densely populated with trees and the forest floor has many flowers and shrubs. The borderlands to the north are lichen woodlands, sparser trees with lichen and fungus as groundcover. All throughtout the belt berries are quite prominent, such as strawberries, cranberries and lingonberries. As for animals they are very specialized to deal with the cold, and are mostly herbivores such as moose, elk, deer, rams and bison with some large predators such as bears, wolves and tigers. There are also smaller rodents such as squirrels, beavers, rabbits, chipmunk and porcupine. There are also quite a few birds that live here during the summer then migrate south in the winter. The monsters here mostly emerge from the underdark to hunt and then stay down there during winter.
The Bitter Crown (Northern Tundra): The northernmost areas are covered in tundras, bitingly cold and devoid of all but the toughest life. There are almost no trees, the groundcover is a huge variety of grass, flowers, lichen and moss. During the summer there are vast meadows full of beautiful flowers. There are very few animals that live here consistently, but those that do normally hibernate during the winter. Such animals include hares, marmots, sheep, foxes, and snow leopards. Some monsters make their lairs up here but extend their hunting territory down into the Belt, such as Frost Giants, White Dragons, and Remhorhaz.
The Underdark: A network of deep subterranean tunnels below the mountains and some other areas of Kizudo, it is extremley dangerous and almost entirely occupied by monsters. It has vast forests of fungus, some luminous. Other areas are lit by lava. Most fear to dwell there, but there is perhaps much to be gained by plundering it's depths...

Ecosystem Cycles

Fall: Trees in deciduous regions begin to lose their leaves, stockpiling for winter completes. The weather grows colder and more snow occurs until winter.
Winter: It is bitterly cold and snows quite often. Many animals hibernate. Decidous trees lose their leaves. The Bitter Crown freezes over.
Spring: It thaws out, temperatures increase and many animals mate. There is a huge burst of life.
Summer: Temperatures rise, stockpiling for winter begins. The Bitter Crown blooms and many animals are born.

Localized Phenomena

There is geothermal activity quite frequently, such as geysers, steam vents, and lava flows.
Giants enclaves dot the land, often causing unseasonable weather to harass mortals, or trying to extort them for food, money or servitude.
Use railways, slides and chutes powered by earthbending to move platforms throughout the mountains and some of the exterior lands.
Have petracite, a magic absorbing rock that saps magic from the surroundings but explodes when overcharged.

Climate

The climate is always brisk, even during the summer. There is frequent rainfall. The seasons, outside of supernatural interference, are very stable and predictable.

Natural Resources

Wood: Oak, maple, bamboo, larch, spruce, fir and pine.
Food: The Skirts is most suitable for agriculture, but it is widely practiced throughout the Belt, albeit with stricter seasonal requirements. They grow grains like wheat, barley and oats, as well as various fruit such as apples, grapes, pears, mandarin oranges, stone fruits and berries. Stone fruits include peaches, plums, cherries, nectarines, apricots and lychee. Berries include strawberries, blueberries, blackberrries, Cranberries, Lingonberry, and Raspberries. They also grow vegetables such as, Spinach, Lettuce, Carrots, Cabbage, Broccoli, Radish, Brussels sprouts, Turnips, Onions, Leek, Cauliflower, Potato, Arugula, and Cucumbers. There is also a decent amount of livestock, cows goats and sheep harvested for milk and meat.
Fur and Wool: There are a lot of very furry animals throughout Kazanshiro, and there are quite a few trappers and hunters willing to make fine winter gear out of them for all Kizudo.
Stone and Metal: There is quite a bit of stone for construction, furniture and jewlery. For construction and furniture there is granite, basalt and marble. For gemstones there is quartzes (including amethyst, citrine and ametrine), the garnets, moonstone, apatite, diamond, spinel, tanzanite, tourmaline, topaz and zircon. There is also veins of metal such as copper, iron, lead, zinc, gold, and silver.

History

Time of Myth
Both O-Hiroto and O-Saruyama laid claim here during the rush to populate Kizudo with sentient life. The favored children of O-Hiroto the Stormbringer were the Giants, elemental spirits of towering size, although he also had a hand in creating the Dwarves, Firbolg, Genasi, and Goliath alongside O-Saruyama. The Monkey King helped create their homes, on the mountains, underneath them and in the valleys between them and created Minotaur, Satyr and Monkeyfolk personally. He stole them some of O-Asahi's flame to use during the winter and to navigate the deep. He also saw how the smallfolk were often abused and enslaved by their giant neighbors and so came to the young warrior Chishiro in his dreams and told him how he would bring harmony between the smallfolk and giants. He told him to go to a cherry grove at sunset the next day and to bring a bundle of sunflowers. He also entered the dreams of the Storm Giant Princess Sakura and told her she should gather cherries in a particular grove the next day. The warrior and princess met in the grove and struck up a conversation, talking for hours enjoying the cherries and eachothers company. After a few such rendevous the princess and warrior fell in love. After a time Chishiro went to the Storm King and asked for her hand in marriage. The storm king said he could if he completed 7 labors, one for each of the Giant Kings. With O-Saruyama's help he managed to complete all the labors and achieve Sakura's hand in marriage. The Storm King was impressed by his tenacity, boldness and cleverness and offered him a boon at the wedding. Chishiro wished that the smallfolk could live free, that they could live in balance, harmony and dignity. The Storm King was moved by his sincere and selfless wish, and so helped many giants to form giant enclaves away from mortals, still a prescence but not directly controlling the smallfolk. Many giants left for the Spirit Realm at the end of the Third Age to help construct and guard O-Tsuba's prison.
    Time of Kings
During the Time of Kings Chishiro's descendants brought the various clans under one banner through conquest, diplomacy or marriage. Yomiji the Scroll King created a vast bureacracy to rule over and organize the various factions under a Shogun, or military leader, and an Emperor who interacts with spiritual forces. The Shogun oversees various regional warlords or Daimyo who manage their ancestral lands and defend them against monsters. Rivalries between various Daimyo often erupted into war, disputes of honor causing webs of alliances to ignite into conflict. The Kasai clan employed a new technology developed by the inventors Jeseto and Reiko, mechanical Clay Soldiers, that helped them consolidate power and ascend to the Shogunate. The Kasai brought great stability, but had greater ambitions. They sought to expand their influence throughout more temperate climates south and east. They found out about the World Cradle and sought to capture it. They contested it with Doronuma and Isamaru, and ignited the Sundering War. The war ground on, various automatons are invented and refined to help fight various foes. The momentum of war carries on for many years, only hampered by an eruption at Mount Akuta, which destroyed the town of Konda and halted the war machine's drive with ash and toxic fumes. After the Sundering Squall the military retreated and hunkered down. The rival Ishi clan led a rebellion to overthrow the Kasai clan and establish a new shogunate.
    Time of Shards
The Ishi Clan have focused on rebuilding Kazanshiro after the war, shoring up defenses, managing monster populations and promoting trade and peace. Faith in Imperial Authority is wavering, as many clans seek to become independtly prosperous.
