Morigana

The Imperial Province of Morigana, also known as the "Basket of the Empire", is one of the twelve founding provinces of the Empire, for much of its history the largest of all Imperial Provinces, encompassing 80% of the northern lands. This colossal expanse was not just a geographical marvel but also a cultural and economic powerhouse. The province was rooted in the traditions of the esteemed Kalsaces, a matriarchal society renowned for its fierce pride and unwavering resilience since the days of Sieghardt- God Emperor.

Morigana's people were known for their indomitable spirit and refusal to compromise their esteemed reputation. They were some of the most challenging individuals to appease, driven by a fierce pride and a commitment to maintaining their storied legacy. Among the Imperial Provinces, the Morriganers excelled in equestrian skills, earning Morigana the prestigious title of the Province of Horse Masters. For centuries, Morigana contributed an astounding 90% of the Empire's total horses, underscoring its unmatched prowess in horsemanship.

The province's landscape was a vast and open expanse, dotted with sprawling cities and crisscrossed by immense rivers that provided both sustenance and strategic advantage. Despite the wealth of the Empire's midlands, Morigana stood as a testament to the fact that prosperity was not confined to those regions. Its cities were grandiose, their architectures a blend of opulence and functionality, reflecting the province's significant wealth and status.

In addition to its economic and cultural significance, Morigana also played a strategic role as a semi-frontier province, occasionally defending against incursions from the Gobi Rainforest tribes. However, this role was infrequent compared to its more prominent contributions to the Empire's prosperity and martial capabilities.

The province's sheer size and the grandeur of its cities and rivers made Morigana a formidable entity within the Empire, leaving an indelible mark on the history and structure of the realm.

The Church of Freya, nestled in the heart of Morigana, was a grandiose edifice that stood as a testament to the province's immense wealth and its pivotal role in the spiritual life of the Empire. This majestic structure was not merely a place of worship but a symbol of Morigana’s cultural and religious prominence, rivaling even the main churches of the other dominant faiths in the Empire.

The church was an architectural marvel, its towering spires piercing the sky and visible from miles away. Crafted from gleaming white marble and adorned with intricate carvings, its façade depicted scenes from sacred lore, weaving a tapestry of divine narratives that captivated all who gazed upon it. The marble itself seemed to shimmer with an ethereal light, reflecting the grandeur and holiness associated with the deity it revered.

As one approached the Church of Freya, the sheer scale of the structure became apparent. Its entrance was marked by massive, intricately designed bronze doors, embossed with symbols of Freya’s virtues. These doors opened into a vast atrium with a high vaulted ceiling supported by majestic columns, each column adorned with elaborate frescoes and golden filigree. The air within the atrium was filled with the soft, melodic echoes of hymns and the scent of incense, creating an atmosphere of serene reverence.

The interior of the church was equally awe-inspiring. The central nave stretched out before worshippers, leading to a grand altar encrusted with precious stones and metals. Behind the altar, a massive stained-glass window depicted Freya in her divine splendor, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the vast hall as sunlight filtered through. This window was a masterpiece of craftsmanship, its vibrant hues and intricate patterns telling the story of Freya’s grace and power.

Flanking the nave were numerous chapels, each dedicated to different aspects of Freya’s divine influence. These chapels were adorned with magnificent tapestries, golden candlesticks, and relics, adding to the overall splendor of the church. The walls were lined with marble statues of saints and angels, their serene faces gazing down upon the congregation in eternal watchfulness.

The Church of Freya was not only a place of worship but also a center of learning and scholarship. Its grand library housed extensive collections of sacred texts, theological treatises, and historical records, attracting scholars and clerics from across the Empire. The church's scholars were renowned for their deep theological insights and their contributions to the Empire's spiritual and intellectual life.

In addition to its religious and educational functions, the Church of Freya served as a center for charitable works and social gatherings. Its vast halls hosted numerous events, including festivals, ceremonies, and charitable functions, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Morigana’s cultural and spiritual identity.

History

Morigana would cause the Era of Turmoil with the seccession from the empire by Imperial Prince Deion and then defeating Emperor Wido at the battle of Clanse. The northlands of Raaroland and Morigana united as one into an empire, centered in Morigana. The Deion Empire, also known as the Morrigan Empire believed in Freya and waged many wars against the other pretender empires as well as foreign nations.

During the Great War of Undeath, the once-glorious Imperial Province of Morigana met a catastrophic fate. The province, which had been a beacon of wealth and vitality in the Empire, was ravaged by the relentless undead legions. The lush, fertile lands of Morigana, known for their vast open landscapes and sprawling rivers, were reduced to a barren wasteland.

The Great War of Undeath transformed Morigana into the harsh expanse of the Gobi Desert. The once-vibrant fields and fertile soil turned into lifeless sand and rock, scoured by the relentless forces of the undead. The grand cities, including the majestic capital, lay in ruins, their splendor lost to the destructive tide of the undead onslaught.

The transformation was not merely environmental. The Gobi Desert became infested with countless nomadic tribes, their existence now intertwined with the desolate landscape. These tribes roamed the harsh sands, their culture and way of life adapting to the unforgiving environment that was once Morigana’s thriving heartland.

In the wake of Morigana's devastation, the Empire faced a profound decline. The loss of such a crucial and prosperous province marked a turning point in the Empire’s fortunes, setting off a downward spiral that affected its stability and strength. The Empire, once buoyed by the wealth and might of Morigana, struggled to maintain its former glory as it grappled with the widespread ramifications of the war's aftermath.
