War Domain

The War Domain is an Archetype of the Cleric Class available to players during Character Creation. It is the third most common type of Cleric in The Old World, and the one most commonly seen at the forefront of religious conflicts, such as the Eisen Civil War. War Clerics are, naturally, fierce warriors who imbue their weapons with divine power and inspire armies of the faithful by leading from the front lines (see https://www.dndwiki.io/subclasses/war-domain, but note the variant rules detailed below).

War Clerics are, in many ways, similar to Paladins, in that they are melee Combatants who channel divine energy through their weapons to attack with superhuman strength. They differ, however, in that they also command a wide array of spells, many of which help them bolster their already considerable martial prowess. Much like war itself, they can be heroic and cruel in equal measure. Some War Clerics are honorable champions of the weak and downtrodden, while others are violent psychopaths who revel in bloodshed.

War is a secondary domain of Pholtus and, though not as common as Light Clerics, War Clerics are present in most Pholtist denominations. Cuthbertines in particular are likely to embrace the War Domain, as did St. Cuthbert himself prior to his martyrdom. Aside from Pholtus, popular war gods include Bahamut, one of the two deities commonly worshiped by Dragonborn, Moradin, the Dwarven creator god, and Gruumsh, chief deity of the Orc pantheon.

War Clerics are subject to the following variant rules:
  • A War Cleric regains all expended uses of their "War Priest" ability on a Short Rest, rather than a Long Rest;
  • A War Cleric may use their "Divine Strike" ability any time they hit a creature with a weapon attack. Once they have used Divine Strike, they may not use it again until the beginning of their next turn. Additionally the extra damage granted by a War Cleric's Divine Strike increases from 1d8 to 2d8 at Level 12 and from 2d8 to 3d8 at Level 16.
