Briary of Molisloth

The Briary of Molisloth is a division of the Kingdom of Lesser Imesse located between the Molis River and the edges of the Teboba highlands. It was established by King Mak II as a place of safety and security in a region frought with danger. The Briary is literally a frontier of civilization in the heart of Imesse.   Immediately to the south and east of the Briary stretch the hundreds of square miles of rough, mostly uncharted lands known as Teboba. These steep, forest-covered hills and mountains are full of undiscovered wealth, history and danger.  King Mak II has specifically instructed the Briar to implement a policy of subduing the region, mile by mile, to bring its resources and territories under the direct control of the Kingdom.  To reach this goal, the Briar has offered a standing bounty on many of the most dangerous monsters known to haunt the region, as well as cash rewards and land grants for adventurers that succeed at pacifying the wilderness.

Structure

The Briary is a division of the Royal Domains of Lesser Imesse, and as such it is directly ruled by Mak II as King of Lesser Imesse.  The Lord Steward of the Realm, Gerard am Frigani has direct authority of the routine administration of the Domains, and as such is the direct lord and leader of the Briar.  The immediate rule of the Briary is the responsibility of Briar Lewin Woodward, who is assisted in his duties by the Captain of the Town Watch, and the Town's Alderman.

Culture

The Briary is a frontier region.  The Briar and the Lord Steward have provided for this fact by encouraging the establishment of many varied and specialty workshops and craftsman that provide services and items specifically for the many adventurers looking to make their fortunes in the wilds of Teboba.  Life can be short and violent in the wild hills surrounding the Briary, and the people frequenting the Town and villages reflect that in how they live and spend their money.

Public Agenda

Molisloth is a center for the ongoing pacification and development of the neighboring region of Teboba.  Adventurers that successfully tame areas of the wild highlands or fill bounties assigned by the Crown are given grants of Stronghold, which allows them to build a fortification and develop previously unmanaged land to their own profit and the benefit of the Realm.

Demography and Population

The Briary has a total population of 12,500 souls.  5,500 are Human, and 3,500 are Halfling.  The rest are Dwarves and Gnomes working in specialty positions throughout the Briary.  There is a sizable transient population within the Briary at any given time that must also be considered.  The bounties and rewards of cash and land offered by the King to successful adventurers keeps the town and villages full of aspiring warriors, heroes and mages.

Territories

The Briary itself covers an area of just more than 800 square miles, and follows the southern bank of the Molis River for nearly 40 miles.  There are two bridges over the Molis within the Briary, one of wooden posts driven into the river and the other of stone abutments supoprting a wooden road surface.  Both bridges span roughly 60' of river, and both can be removed or destroyed in case of attack or danger.

Religion

There is a Holy House of the Druidic Faith and a small Temple of the Pantheon of Heaven in the Town of Molisloth, as well as numerous Maranonic idols located around the Briary.

Agriculture & Industry

The land around the Briary is fertile riverland with a rich, dark soil.  Farms abound, as do orchards and ranches.  Several successful pony and mule breeders make a good living selling pack animals to adventure parties.  However, the driving industry of the Briary's economy is adventuring support and supply.  Inns, sutlers, armorers, smiths, healers, potioners, and hirelings are located all over the Briary.

Trade & Transport

The Briary fronts the Molis River, a broad and smooth river that rolls swiftly to the Caldar to the north.  There are several excellent roads leading to the Briary from Moliton, Bolrick and Billinford.  There are more than a dozen carters operating in the Brairy and nearly that many bargemen.
