The Heart of the Bayou is a gem – a fabulous opal that was found deep in
Darkmoss Bayou in
Dalenshire. Once upon a time, it was set in the handle of
O'goun, granting that weapon tremendous power, but, when
Limba was slain the first time, it was deemed unnecessary. Instead, the gem was removed and set in a necklace, worn by many
Haute Granperes and Granmeres of the
Halfling nation.
The gem was lost years ago when
Orcs from the
Orcish Steppes raided southern Dalenshire. It was set into the crown of the so-called King of
Sharbaduk, who ruled from
Castle Valkurath on that island’s southern shores. When
Mount Blackplume erupted in 970 SKR, the castle was lost in lava flows, and the Heart of the Bayou was lost with it.
It wasn’t found in the Castle when the
Fire Wasps explored it, but that was later explained by the Fire
Genasi Acherex. According to him,
Azers who fled to the
Elemental Chaos brought the gem with them from the castle and traded it for safety in the
City of Brass. It eventually found its way into the hands of
Shulreth, who gave it to the Fire Wasps
for
Tilly Thistleshanks to complete O'goun, expressing a desire not to see
Tol destroyed by the
Tarrasque. With the Tarrasque defeated, Tilly has kept O'goun whole and intends it to be an heirloom of his clan, complete with the Heart set into its pommel.
