Khavtan, also known as "the Slab" and "the Slayer of Would-Be Khans", is a magical sword of the
Hobgoblin Khanate. It was best known as the primary weapon of
Grand Khan Drack in the late Fourth Age and early Fifth Age, before it became an heirloom of
Clan Bactrian of
Frozen Fleet Post.
Description
Khavtan is an enchanted greatsword. The length of the blade is a cool, steely color. The wide blade ends in a flat, square edge, which gives it the nickname "the Slab". Along the flat of the blade are grooves of glowing, cobalt blue.
In the early Fifth Age, a pair of engravings were added to the blade. One side reads, "Chotgorrin, First Fist of the Khanate". The other side reads, "No Victory Without Sacrifice".
The blade is enchanted and requires attunement from the wielder. The blade allows the wielder to cast the
"Compelled Duel" spell once per day. Additionally, the target of the spell has disadvantage on all their dice rolls. This effect also functions if the wielder of Khavtan is under the effect of another spellcaster's
"Compelled Duel" spell.
History
The Fourth Age: The Age of Shadow
In the late Fourth Age, Khavtan was used by
Khan Drack as the leader of
Clan Tarbagan in
Meenakhan. Drack used the blade in his victories in his ritual duels against the other Khans of the time, earning the blade the title "Slayer of Would-Be Khans".
The blade was Drack's primary weapon during his time as Grand Khan of the
Hobgoblin Khanate. This included his actions during the
Tarterian War at the end of the age.
The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings
In 5A 023, Drack brought Khavtan on his voyage on the
Vikramadi through the
South Sea.
On 12 Naerui 5A 023, Drack made a speech on the deck of the Vikramadi before members of the assembled Clan Tarbagan legion. During this speech, he held Khavtan aloft to great roars of applause, before the speech was interrupted by
Hagillr's Horn of Storms. As the ship rocked in the storm, Drack jammed Khavtan into the deck as a handhold.
After the Vikramadi crashed onto the
Ice Ways, Drack used the blade in battle against attacking trolls and polar bears. He was defeated and captured, and he was brought to
Mösön Uul.
At the
Urskan Crevasse, Drack was brought before
Hagillr, the Lone Hailstone. He attacked the giant with Khavtan. In response, Drack's arm was severed and the blade was taken as a trophy.
Later on 12 Naerui 5A 023, the blade was cut from the neck of Hagillr by
Chotgorrin at the cost of his life. The blade was recovered and taken out of the
Ivory Glacier by
Braavak, where it was given to
Ganbaatar as his superior officer.
Ganbaatar returned the blade to Grand Khan Drack. Ganbaatar would later recommend an engraving be added to the blade, which Drack agreed to.
Khavtan would become an heirloom of the new
Clan Bactrian. It would be kept by the leaders of the clan in
Frozen Fleet Post.
