Green Fox Chapter 23

Plumes of smoke spiralled from the temple’s windows, lit up from within by a raging fire. Eva was the first up the steps, plunging into the chaotic scene only to collapse as acrid smoke filled her nostrils. Strong hands grabbed her, pulling her away.

“Stay low and out of the smoke,” Eshale said as she pulled her across the floor. “Cosi!” Eva’s voice fell flat against the roar and the ominous sound of stone fracturing from the depths below. “Where is he?” Famor dropped to his stomach and pointed to the rear of the temple. “The voice, he said he could hear it coming from the lower floors. What if he’s gone for the collector?” Eva set off for the steps, but Famor grabbed her leg, holding her back. “Don’t go rushing in. Let us take the lead.” “I need to find him,” Eva’s voice quivered, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “We all do,” Eshale said. “But we have to tread carefully.” With Eshale leading the way, they crawled across the cold stone floor towards the rear staircase. Reaching the top, Eshale gestured for them to lie flat, minimising their profiles against the smoke billowing up from below. “This is beyond anything I imagined.” Famor coughed, the thick smoke assaulting his lungs. “What could be burning down there?”
