“Your mum will be happy you’re back,” Cosi said, shifting the girl’s weight in his arms. At first, they’d tried to hook up with the other searchers, but they’d quickly realised the going was too hard to continue and angled for the road.
“You can tell her about Wulka,” Eva said as she skipped ahead and walked backwards on the path. Alice twisted to look down at her. “About her ears and the nettles in her tail.” “She was soft,” Alice whispered, but Eva heard her and smiled broadly. Suddenly Eva stopped in the path, staring back along the way they’d come. “What is it?” Cosi asked, turning to follow her gaze. Through the drizzling rain, he could just make out a group of riders approaching in the distance. “Bears, I think. Loads of them.” “More likely horses,” Cosi said, shaking his head. “If it was a pack of bears, we’d be in real trouble.” “Who is it, then?” Eva asked as she brushed her wet hair back and peered intently at strangers. “There’s a lot of them.”If you'd like to read this as an ebook, please follow the link.
