Fortune

Fortune is an oasis town in Qamenkas. It is one of the two primary member settlements in the Seraphine Republic, along with Haven.

Government and Defences

Fortune is part of the Seraphine Republic, along with Haven. Seven of the Republic’s fourteen nominated councillors govern from Fortune, as well as governing the town itself. The councillors in Fortune are:
  • Raloro Numir, a male Harengon. Originally from a wealthy noble family in Agaezika, the Numir family was disgraced and fled to Fortune. Raloro’s immense wealth bought them their voting power.
  • Dee Fernheart, a halfling woman. She gained her voting power from killing a Kruthik Hive Lord whose brood was attacking workers building the Encompassing Wall.
  • The Iron Sage, a strange, eccentric, intelligent iron golem wizard that appeared in Fortune along with the Dangling Tower in 1357 MT. It gained its voting power by contributing its magical services to the community.
  • Tharugall Floshem, a male Uniya half-orc. He gained his voting power from his service in the military.
  • Bhenkumbyrznaax Dazzazn, a female green Tavanuan dragonborn. She commonly goes by the nickname “Kumbyr”, and gained her voting power from her service in the military.
  • Hujldan Lastkin, a male Edelhein dwarf. An orphan who made his fortune in tinkering, he gained his voting power from helping design the aqueducts of the Seraphine Republic.
  • Arkira Dariush, a male Khiravi tiefling. He gained his voting power from his service in the military.
Fortune is defended by the Seraphine Republic’s military, known as the Arms of the Ash. It is also defended by the Encompassing Wall that surrounds the entirety of the Republic’s territory.

Commerce

Fortune, as well as the rest of the Seraphine Republic, is known for their production of incense and sugarcane. The Seraphine Republic is currently attempting to set up an irrigation network across its territory, mostly for producing its primary grains, sorghum and millet. Fortunites also use the sorghum and sugarcane in the production of rum.

Geography

Fortune is located in central Qamenkas, next to the Golden Oasis. Landmarks in Fortune include:
  • The Hall of Fortune - the governmental building of Fortune. Inside, the town’s seven councillors debate the matters of the settlement, as well as issues within the Republic.
  • The Westward Gate - a fortification built into the portcullis of the Encompassing Wall. The Westward Gate acts as the headquarters of the Arms of the Ash, led by the male uniya General Lumabar Elben.
  • The Screaming Behemoth - a fairly cheap inn and tavern. Iconic from the somewhat cute wood carving of a yelling ankylosaurus hanging above its door, the inn is serviced by the male Tanuki Obake Sadao Stripetail. It has a limited selection of drinks, excluding rum, because of the difficulty of trading it so far into the desert.
  • Len’a’lith Du’kla - a weapons store owned by the female Githyanki Vir’ra. She established the store after arriving in Fortune, having been spit out of a circle into the desert of Qamenkas.
  • Basilisk Blood - an herbalist and apothecary well known for its poisons. It is run by the Lizardfolk woman Surkech.
  • The Kicking Tree - a general store carved from the husk of a petrified Treant. It is owned by the male Khiravi tiefling Woe Kermanian.
  • The Dangling Tower - a mage tower that rose from the earth suddenly in 1357 MT. It is named for its hooked shape, at the end of which an abode hangs from on sturdy ropes. The Dangling Tower is inhabited by the Iron Sage.
  • Fortune Temple - once a temple to Mesemkau, the Fortune Temple has since been converted into an interdenominational house of shrines for the residents of the town. Shrines to Avandra, Ioun, Yewa, Melora, and Kikanuti, among others, have been placed there. While the shrines are attended to, few of those who take care of the shrines have official recognition as clergy from their faiths.

History

Fortune was founded in 1173 MT by the Eladrin elf woman Naishana Mithanmyr. She acted as the ruler of Fortune for 51 years before leaving. In her place, Fortune began ruling by council.   In 1267 MT, the Shemzuz tribe of orcs emigrated from Suvilidas to Fortune, fleeing both the red dragon Uxingier and the last few remnants of the Niranist Inquisition. In the modern day, most of their descendants are only of partial orc lineage, with a high population of Uniya.   In 1296 MT, Fortune established the Seraphine Union with Haven, having mostly converted to the worship of Mesemkau.   In 1335 MT, after Olviel’s death, Fortune and Haven re-established the Seraphine Union as the Seraphine Republic. The switch in government was influenced by Fortune’s pre-Seraphine council system..   Early in 1365 MT, Fortune’s third council since the establishment of the Republic was selected via lottery.
