Umorth (/ˌuːmɔːrθ/ OO-morth)

Umorth, the Necromancer

Umorth was a powerful Red Wizard of Thay who operated out of the Mountain's Toe Gold Mine in the Sword Coast. He was skilled in necromancy and commanded a small group of fellow Thayans.   The wizard was once in posession of the spellbook of the legendary wizard Bowgentle, before it was stolen by Anchorites of Talos, and a large stone capable of generating an antimagic field. He was killed in battle when Thokk Verantor, working alongside the Hat Gang, stabbed him in the head with one of his own ribs.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Umorth was an extremely old and frail-looking human man with pale, mottled skin and silvery blue eyes. Like most Thayan Wizards, umorth's head is shaved and decorated with black tattoos. His unkempt white beard hung down at his waste.

Special abilities

A skilled necromaner, Umorth was also proficient in other forms of magic, such as transmutation, as shown when he animated a table to aid him in combat against the Hat Gang.   Umorth could also absorb the life force of those he killed, healing himself in the process, though when he himself was killed, his victims were returned to life.

Apparel & Accessories

Umorth wore the red robes typical of a Red Wizard, adornedwith golden necromantic symbols and the Thayan emblem.   Umorth's spellbook was written in Thayan, and as such was hard for most to understand. The wizard wielded an Ebon Lash, a dark magic scourge that allowed him to mentally dominate his foes.

Personal history

Arrival in the Swords Coast

In early 1491, Umorth, along with three of his fellow Red Wizards, Nezzin, Lashela, and Zarzemmenar, and several apprentices, took Mountain's Toe, forcing the mines former residents, a pack of wererats led my Zeleen Varnaster, into service as guards. The innermost chambers of the cave system were converted into quarters for Umorth and his subordinates, with Umorth's study located within the deepest cavern.   Also that year, sometime before the 4th of Nightal, Umorth traveled to Conyberry and traded a jade comb for Bowgentle's Spellbook with Auglathla the banshee, returning to his hideout at the mine with the book. At a later date, the book was taken by the half-orc Anchorites of the Storm Lord, Talos.   When the wizard Zarzemmenar was revealed to be a Doppelganger spy working for the Black Spider, Umorth ordered for him to be killed and the wererats were to dispose of the corpse, although they ultimately did not.

Discovered by the Hat Gang

On the 16th of Nightall, the Hat Gang came upon Mountain's Toe on their search for their friend Greta's stolen belongings, believing that one of the wererats had stolen them. After finding a stash of hidden silver weapons, the party managed to persuade the wererats to let them through the restricted doors to the back of the mine. Whilst the intruders rested in a barricaded room, Umorth readied himself for their confrontation and ordered Nezzin to exterminate the wererats.   Eventually, the party made it to Umorth's study. Boston Bornes and Dymera rushed ahead and when Dymera entered the room the door locked behind her, trapping her inside. Umorth attempted to charm her with his ebon lash and, although he was unsuccessful at first, he eventually succeded, just before the rest of the party broke down the door. The wizard fought off the adventurers alongside his animated table, using a barrage of powerful necromantic spells. Umorth's stone prevented anyone but him from casting spells, which proved difficult for the party to deal with. Over the course of the fight, both Elarnya and Jensen were slain, their life forces consumed by Umorth.

Death

Ultimately, the anchorite Thokk killed Umorth, tearing out one of his ribs and using it to crack his skull open. When this happened, his slain party members were returned to life.
"The wererats have been dealt with, now it's time for me to deal with you too."
