Aquila (Uh-KEY-luh)

V2
Themes
  • Both sides in a conflict can be wrong, while having understandable starting points from which they took fearful/unoptimal steps toward those acts.
  • How The Powerful can weaponize your pain to trick you into digging yourself deeper into a hole.
  • "Resistance" as a marketing brand in the alt-right way.
  • Who is benefitting from the family v company divide? ultimately that conflict is a political one. so there's a company profitting off the indignation of the families (like fox news leeching off its viewers). And the families are promoting 'aquilan family business' over buying stuff from the trading companies. ^ HAPPENING
  • About: The move from Clans to Companies. Mourning how commerce has replaced honor (but for the wrong reasons - bitterness arising from lost privilege and how republicans weaponize that). unheroic rebels   Aqula is the oldest Thaig and the center of Dwarven history and Scalatoran tradition. As Scalatoran society shifts toward The Company as its most powerful unit, the Old Families chafe at being left behind. Here in Aquila, that chafing is fullbore friction, bordering on fire. Here, an extremist group called The Ancestors' Wrath, or the CDA, fights back against the influence of Companies. The Families deny any involvement in that, but of course are aligned, generally, with the sentiment.   Aquila's main export is dwarves. Well educated naval people who will be divided up and eaten by corporations instead of serving with their families. Monuments around here remind folks of the The Old Way in which the families were at war. Today that serves as a galvanizing reminder to stand together against corporations.
Who ELSE is profiting from this conflict and how? Because they're PART of who is stoking the conflict (the actors in the conflict are doing it too. and primarily), but from a distance maybe. - The Pedigree
  • The 8 Families (string pullers). Hiring pirates.
  • a smaller group that really supercedes the commission eccelente.
  • and a group of Company folks? love the idea of both sides playing each other.
  • include "party of scalatoran honor" somewhere (POSH). They're the acceptable face of the CDA. They're the dwarves outside of The Families who campaign against the companies. the pawns of the Old Families, aka the product of The Pedigree

  •

    Layout

Sprawling. Ostentatious use of horizontal space. open parks + plazas. Statues everywhere (metal + carved thaigrock). But that infrastructure is starting to crumble. Almost foreshadowing this place turning into a warzone.
  • Port District. Company-driven portion of the city. the district spreads outward from the docks themselves, and has been gradually encroaching on other parts of the city to the frustration of native Aquilans.
  • August Hills - a House-focussed district. Includes Founder's Park, which is a big open area in the center of the district. Around it is a row of estates called The August Crescent because of the shape taken by those Original House estates. Brunari Estate is naturally at the center.
  • Silver District. Business District. shops, concert halls, etc. Includes Sienna Mall, an open-air market for smaller crafty stuff. this is where the marching band battles happen. The mall is a big, open rectangle where stands are set up but around the outside of that are larger buildings where forges are set up and much of the actual crafting gets done.
  • Happenings

  • vasari pirates
  • ship sabotage at Bartoni's
  • the poisoning at the tavern.
  • Individual happenings for most of the Families
  • (opt) Fuconotte and CDA activity
  • (opt) Founder's Day and company frustration

  • The Families and The Commission Eccellente

An aristocracy. seats passed through families and nepotism and alliances. It was originally 8 families and 16 seats on the Aquilan Commission: Bianci, Mazzeli, Volga, Vasari, Spatafore, Aligheri, Caravaggio, Gentileschi. In recent times, Brunari (which began without seats due to founder's celebrity status) has aquired 4 seats through marriage and other deals.

    Culture

    Architecture

columns. Design blurs the line between roman clasiccism and the kind of early american estate houses that mimic classicism.

    Art

Renaissance-style realism and illusion. Trompe l'oeil. This is a place where people still sit for portraits.   Sargeant Vermiri - formerly a sailor serving in the World Navy. now the most esteemed painter in the Aquilan style.   Gentileschis are prominent in the art community. They operate a studio (called Studio Orazio as well as a few galleries, including Evola Gallery.

    Music:

Marching bands and brass-focused orchestras. Marching bands perform at the Sienna Mall in competitions. sometimes head to head, and sometimes they just randomly march around and kind of beef when they get too close. but ultimately the family-family rivalry rarely comes to violence. they've been united against the companies pretty well. Marching Bands: Gentileschi Marching Band, Mazzeli Stampede, The Volga Jamboree, Aligheri Drumline, Caravaggio Band)
    The Grand Scalatoran Theatre
Nice place for big fancy concerts. In August Hills. Owned by Brunari.

    Holidays

  • Founder's Day - Aquila. The Founding of Aquila - Brunari Family tied into this.
  • Accord Day. signing of the Accord (mixed feelings) - Russo Family tied into this.
  • Fuoconotte, The Night of Torches, Torchnight. they do something to mark/celebrate the ardente riots. Maybe sorvino is tied into this one?
  • National heroes.

    Monumented:
  • Justina Marino inventor of the first balloon
  • Antonella Fritsi discovery of aether. Monument at the Brunari Academy campus at the meeting of August Hills and Silver District.
  • Raphael Brunari the founder of Aquila. Monument stands in Founder's Park, in August Hills.
  • Ludovico Mazzeli the john hancock of The Scalatore Code. in August Hills.
  • Arianna Russo instrumental in creating The Aquilan Accords. statue in the Square where it was signed.
  • lesser monuments:
  • Tomasso Bianci inventor of the harpoon gun. Statue in Silver District.
  • Sienna Taiga first person to set foot on a berg
  • Giuseppe Vasari Captain of the first rubber-metal aether-baloon airship. Statue (maybe *was* in the Port District but has been moved somewhere safer by the family).
  • Michaelangelo Garibaldi inventor of the pizza. Set up outside The Original Garibaldi's Pizza.
  • Museum of Scalatoran History
Huge. celebration of dwarven history with The Families at the center of everything. The Old Way is depicted heroically, and the message is: "These people were heroes. they fought for their families. though it's better that we don't fight amongst ourselves anymore." Owned/Operated by the Spatafore Family.

    Brunari Academy

Dwarven University primarily built around ships - crewing, manufacture, etc. sort of a military school. Aquila's main export is dwarves. Well educated naval-family sailors who get divided up and eaten by corporations instead of serving with their families. As tragic as that is, the skill of those sailors is a major point of civic pride for Aquila. Located at the border of August Hills and Silver District.

    Crime & Punishment

actual gallows from the olden days. The Silver Gallows don't even include neck stuff - you just get dropped through a hole and fall. Located in the Silver District.

    Enterprise/Industry

    Misc Enterprises

    Mercuri Couriers
Couriers on-foot. operated by Mazzeli Family. Who use this cover to extract information to aid the Ottofamiglia.

    Religion

Olympianism is here, but hasn't caught on too much. Dwarves are traditionally atheist, and many have come to see Olympianism as an arm of Casadoro's influence, so they reject it. So it's a usually empty chapel in the Port District.   some Conjunctivism, but again, it's small. It's not a concern, though.
    Temple of the Muses
where those that have Fomori Muses go. It's mostly just abstracted figurative statues carved out of the rock of the thaig. almost a serene artistic place than organized. think Rothko's chapel in houston. Gentileschi family involved. Located in Silver District

    Agriculture

Little shroomfarming here. that's 'beneath' them. but it does happen and they do use it as an ingredient, rather than full meals. Lots of trellisses for vined food: grapes, tomatoes, hops, peas, etc. Chicken coops and goats. Baroni, Bianci, Sorvino, and Vasari involved heavily in the farming.

    Joints

    Luigi's Old Aquilan Espresso
Silver District. Espresso Cafe (Luigi Pavoni, M, 85)
    The Old Way
in Silver District close to August Hills. Sons of liberty vibe bar. themed with icons from the history of interfamily war.
    Giacco's
company-friendly tavern in the Port District Job/Storyline: a server poisoning company sailors. (maybe had to serve someone and realized it was a childhood friend. froze up and left or poisoned him and then freaked out).
    The Original Garibaldi's
    - they have beef with the Casadoro Garibaldi's. This is where Michaelangelo Garibaldi opened his first restaurant, before later moving to Casadoro. Their pizza is very different from each other. Casadoro's is NY Style. Aquila's is the cracker crust neopolitan woodfire oven. Owned/operated by Sorvinos.

    Arms

    Leone's Legacy
Silver District. Gimli Carava, Dwarf. place that has a secret stock that it only sells to people that aren't aligned with a company. A non-dwarven player party will be asked "which company are you with" and be very suspicious of them. Great guns, hidden. Perception checks may show gun-cleaning tools or something like that. Have underground connections to CDA.
  • so what do they sell in that case? Shitty bog-standard company-regulation shortswords.
  • if the players pass the smell test, there are top notch guns here, as well as hammers, Sabres, Rapiers, and Estocs
  • Arma Traders Company Store
Port District. Mario Vivaldi, dwarf Brick and Mortar location in The Port District. Sells weapons of a wide variety.
    Various crafters
in Silver District - will sell you the weapon off the anvil

    Shipbuilding

Built into the docks, mostly for repairs
    Bartoni Mechanics
Run by Toni Bartoni, dwarf, m, 62. They make a lot of money working on Company ships. Here or there, though, there may be a mechanic or two who secretly works with the CDA. They probably do have to kick a few bucks to the Families. sort of an extortion/protection deal allowing them to not have problems with their supply or whatever.

    Polizia/guards

    The Aquilan Polizia
Filomena Baron, f, 55, Dwarf. Primodella Polizia. work for the commission and they are as corrupt and unprofessional at early american cops were. Blatantly serve The Families. Heavy overlap between them and the CDA, so the CDA doesn't really get stopped.

    Jotun
is not-so-secretly an offshoot of Titan here. Established near the docks and propped up by the companies that do business here. They're pushed to stop the CDA, but they run into conflict with the Aquilan Police who run interferance.

    Power / Utilities

    Aquilan Crystalworks
under-aquila windmills harness energy for crystals. House Aligheri leads in charge of harnessing and distributing/selling it. better prices for Family than companies. lots of connections to the Port district and ruffians fucking with Energy Companies who come in.

    Item Shops

    Aquilan Family Value
Silver District. Allegra Grisante, F, 72, Dwarf. mom and pop shop that's very 'american made' in its identiy. Has a kid working there at 32.
    Aquilan Antiques and Pawn
Silver District. Adriana Spina, F, 48, Dwarf. magic item store.

    Reporting

    The Gold Standard
They print here, but don't see a lot of success. Mostly just picked up/patronized by Company sailors when they're in town. It's actually hard to find The Standard at a newstand outside of the port district. Their office is in Port District as well.
    The Aquilan Pedigree
Run by Spatafore, A paper that caters to the houses. It's actually new (~50-70 years or so), but it considers itself the spiritual successor of an old, defunct, Aquilan paper called "The Aquilan Post." They directly profit off the Family-focused narrative. CDA does some rebel zines - which is just magic messages on existing Pedigree papers. since the gold post has that magic ink, it prevents secret messages. so the CDA prints on the loyalist paper. which is to their audience.

    Public Transportation

Wasps: rented scooter/vespas. Put silver in, like the lime scooters. they have tracking runes on them. but they're all small and dwarven sized. owned/operated by Mazzeli Family. Some enchanted carriages for the House Folks.

    black market goods

NEED to develop characters and shops. probably heavily tied to the CDA in that the CDA is the biggest customer here. but a salesman is a salesman.
  • getting-in is either done through the Silver District or maybe the CDA papers, or alternatively a place in the August Hills. The Volga Family is secretly deeply involved in the security/secrecy of the black market.
  • Hospitals

    owned/operated by Bianci Family.

    Banks

Operated by a lot of Brunari Family.

    CDA

write more about the CDA's happenings. NEED (could also do on their page)

    Sports

    The Lucanium"
Located on the border between Silver District and August hills. The Lucanium and the university combine to almost form the border there.   Happening: match where a company team faces off against a House Family team - tension and violence expected. The family teams compete with each other, but when one of them faces a company team, everyone gets behind them.

  • Meta

Role: Oldest Thaig. Tradition and Prestige (but being replaced)
Inspiration: Rome! traditional dwarven vibes (wide-open). broad. Statues and architecture. Old Institutions. Great Gatsby. maybe a bit of Sons of Liberty stuff going on with the rebellion here.
Themes: The move from Clans to Companies. Mourning how commerce has replaced honor (but for the wrong reasons - bitterness arising from lost privilege and how republicans weaponize that). unheroic rebels
Hubbub: Underground movement, discontented priveleged offspring getting violent. The Ancestors' Wrath are an anonymous extremist group.
Events/set pieces around: resistance flyers about the lost of place for clans (well printed. like if rich, Old Money people wanted to do graffiti)
