Doom Buggy

The Doom Buggy was a heavily modified infernal warmachine, a tormentor, used by the Lost Star Detectives during their time spent traveling around Avernus to end the Damnation of Elturel.

History

The Doom Buggy was in use by the hag Mad Maggie for some period of time before 1497, but was left in the workshop of Fort Knucklebones when battle damages compromised its armor plating.   In 1497, the Lost Star Detectives arrived at For Knucklebones following a lead to save the city of Elturel from its destruction. At the fort, the Detectives made a deal with Mad Maggie to give them access to the fort's Dream Machine to recover the lost memories of their hollyphant companion Lulu, but doing this meant finding four component parts the machine needed to work. Realizing that traveling Avernus on foot was foolhardy and likely too time consuming, Maggie made a deal with Katya Sinaran, giving the Detectives the use of the tormentor.   Immediately upon purchase and leaving the fort, the Detectives were attacked by the warlord Raggadragga, who they managed to fend off, and pursued by the bounty hunter Azzimon, who they killed on foot. Dzarya, who became the machine's de facto driver, named the machine the Doom Buggy and attempted to repair its armor plating, to no success.   After a stop at Bel's Forge, the Detectives returned to Fort Knucklebones and paid its kenku mechanics to fix the armor plating.   The Detectives then drove the Doom Buggy towards and across Zariel's Bridge, stopping at a crashed Avernian flying fortress and the shop of Uldrak the Tinkerer before forming a temporary alliance with the warlords Bitter Breath, Kolasiah, and Algoran to kill the warlord Smiler the Defiler. However, the Detectives were waylaid on their way to the Bloody Crescent by the Crypt of the Hellriders, and ended up confronting Smiler alone, who contacted the forces of Tiamat and the Githyanki to cover his escape. The Doom Buggy was raced across and around the Bloody Crescent, avoiding the abishai chasing them and the red dragon pursuing them from above.   The Doom Buggy was then taken to Algoran's Arena and then the Wandering Emporium, where the Detectives bought a Devil's Ride and an attachment to hook it up to the Doom Buggy, which was sorely needed, as the Detectives had recently been joined by Thei Linden and Armag, leaving space scarce. On the way back to the arena, the now improved Doom Buggy was ambushed by the devil Thalamara Vanthampur, who was easily dispatched. The tormentor was then taken back to the arena and guarded by Thei and Armag while the Detectives retrieved a nirvanan cogbox and rescued the ki-rin Enki. Enki's rescue also resulted in Thei leaving the Detectives with the celestial, freeing up more space.   The Doom Buggy was seriously put to the test during a trip to Tiamat's Lair, where the Detectives failed to retrieve Katya Sinaran's wife Emmeryn, who was an abishai in Tiamat's service. Pursued by abishai, dragons, and githyanki, the Detectives barely managed to escape the highway to Dis that runs through Tiamat's lair, able to blend in to the traffic heading into Avernus.   When most of the Detectives were captured by the hag Zilly Redwood and teleported to the Material Plane, the Doom Buggy remained in the possession of Lulu and Whisk, who drove it to the Crypt of the Hellriders to get the aid of Olanthius, who managed to bring the other advetnurers back to Hell. The tormentor was again temporarily abandoned while the Detectives infiltrated Zariel's flying fortress and retrieved right after. The buggy was taken to Fort Knucklebones and then faced its final test when the combined forces of Algoran, Bitter Breath, and Kolasiah joined forces to try and kill the Detectives, with the heroes of Elturel emerging on top.   After the Detectives retrieved the Sword of Zariel, the Detectives were again confronted by a group of abishai. Unable to escape them, Lulu teleported the Heroes to Elturel, leaving the Doom Buggy behind.

Weapons & Armament

Like most tormentors, the Doom Buggy possessed a harpoon launcher in its back, capable of firing bolts at pursuing vehicles.   The Doom Buggy was also outfitted with an attachment that allowed a Devil's Ride to be attached to the tormentor's side. Said Devil's Ride was also modified with a side car with a bile thrower.
