17th day in the Feywild
I was up quite early this morning, preparing my speech for Copper when he would wake up, but when he just did it was Ferrum instead of Copper. Lucky for him, I can always just talk in his head. Anyhow, we talked a bit about what happened. William went outside to pray for the poor lady who Ferrum re-buried. I am not sure what he said, some of it was in common, some in elvish and other things in a language I do not know. I am happy he took the time to hopefully let her pass in peace.
We had quite the day today, and we are not even halfway done yet. This morning, the road was actually pretty okay. Sure, we had to go over the ice, through the snow and through the mist, but it was not too bad. Brynjar even taped his knives to his shins to keep himself warm! It looked odd the first few steps, walking with warm knives on your legs, but he soon got back into pace. The man walks just as quietly as Liya does, it is kind of scary sometimes how he can sneak up on you. Well, somewhere during our morning, we came upon a fork in the road. A low and a high path. We found small icicles carved into the stone next to the high path, they looked much like the icicle symbol Liya had found in the hut we spend our first night at. We presumed that that would be the path to follow, and thus we did. The mist got even denser going up this path. What was alarming was what Brynjar saw through Odin when scouting: a person frozen in ice with parts broken off. Not much later, we arrive at the spot. What was quite concerning was Brynjar talking about his theory that the creature influencing the weather here might be a dragon, a white one specifically. I do not know much about dragons, but Liya does en she decided to scout around for a bit, looking for traces. It was not long after that we heard a sound that we were quite sure about was not Liya.
From the mist, a skeletal creature, about the size of a giant, charged towards us. It had some kind of crystal in his chest. Looked like ice, it was clear but slightly radiating some light it seemed. There was not much time to think about it though. To summarize: Arrows flew, axes and halberts slashed and one nice spell nearly swept us all away. Well, that is not quite true, it swept me away. I find it amusing now, being literally stuck in an avalanche, avoiding battle, but it was scary then, to say the least. After an all too familiar spell went off, a deafening noise echoed through the mountain range. Now, I grew up not too far from the mountains around Volheim, and I knew of the stories of loud sounds in high places with lots of snow, it can cause things to start sliding, but Brynjar had not thought of this. Not but a tenth of a minute later, was I engulfed in snow, steadily falling down. Luckily, I was able to cast telekinesis and ensure I had a bubble to breathe in, for else I would have probably suffocated. It was strangely calm in the air bubble underneath all that snow if I had not been gravely concerned of the others. While I build and sculpted the snow underneath me to bring me up all the 120 or so feet I had fallen, the rest was fighting the skeletal-frozen heart giant. When I got to the edge, I was happy to see Ferrum deliver the finishing blow to the skeletal being, quickly followed by 'shatter is a good idea in the mountains'-Brynjar stabbing the strange glowing crystal. That thing apparently was a different creature, a type of parasite that latched on to the undead giant.
Liya and Ferrum were barely standing, and most of us were soaked by the snow that had fallen on us. So no we are resting up a bit. Liya is planning on eating the heart that Brynjar retrieved from the other creatures that attacked us. It looks, unpleasant to eat, to say the least. But alas. She is looking better quickly after eating though, which is good!
The rest of the journey was, just like the morning, eventful. We met a man, a captain, who was frozen inside a waterfall. Brynjar and Ferrum rescued him using their flaming weapons. Brynjar had given me and Liya one to keep us warm for the rest of the day, I was quite sad to give them back. Anyhow, his name is Captain Zolos. He has been stuck in the ice for quite some time apparently, plus he looks like an aquatic being, fins and gills and stuff. We decided to take him along, as he probably will not make it down the mountain alone. He was happy to join and to get a new view after being stuck for so long. While we walk further towards our destination, Zolos told us that he was looking for a cure, his appearance is part of a curse that was put on him long ago by some kind of sea creature. During his search for a solution, he was frozen in the river, but he did not see what it was. We found out not much later.
The frozen river, that had flowed from the waterfall before it was frozen, had eroded away quite a lot of mountain. The river must have been, 220, 250 foot below us? It was hard to see, as mist lay in the path of the river. Across it hanged a bridge. It was quite broken and torn, so we used fly to get across. Ferrum must have hovered above the chasm for too long, for from below a large white dragon flew up, ready to take a bite out of him! Most of us froze on the spot, out of fear, luckily not like the person we had seen on the path earlier. Still, the battle was quite scary. I got hurt badly quite earl on and just bolted and did my best to aid the others from a distance. Zolos did use some strange magic while we were battling the dragon, he had tentacles or something, but they were spectral. It looked odd, might ask about it later. Still, we fled and the dragon did as well.
After that, we sat in Liya's hut for a little bit. It is always so nice in there, such a shame it is only for an hour or so. That hour felt the best though. Afterwards, we were warmed up, healed and patched up a bit and ready to, hopefully not become that dragons afternoon snack. We went outside slowly, checking if the dragon had not been waiting for us, but it was quiet and thus we continued our journey.
Not much later, we came across a cave. Brynjar investigated it and found something that looked like the storage space for the dragon. He probably kept his snacks there, frozen waiting to be eaten. In order to not join their fate, we quickly got away. However, the rest of the journey proved to be not much safer, for as we got closer to the castle, more and more things were covered in ice and frost. Frozen people, animals and items. Until we got to the final few miles of the Path of High Hopes, which had become an icy tunnel. The light from the setting sun scattered through the thinner parts of the tunnel/dome, showing the silhouettes of the things trapped deep within.
At this point, we had been awake for what we could call a day, and seen enough for like a week, so we decided to set up camp and get a nights rest. using the knives, we cut out a hole in the tunnel, in which I place a tiny hut. And that is where we are now. It is cosy, the lot of us in this hut enclosed in ice, but it only feels semi-safe. Brynjar is scouting now using Odin. He already saw three different buildings, the castle and two others, stables and a temple apparently. There are more skeletal giants there, also frozen ones. They do not seem undead according to Byrnjar, which is good news! Less good news, we are hearing the dragon approach.
It has been decided we attack.
