A human, a fire genasi, and a white-tailed dragonborn walked into a bar.
------------
Each had been in Waterdeep for days, scrounging for scraps. Each on their own playing for pockets of people, hoping some coppers would be thrown their way. That particular morning all three happened to start the day in the same square. The genasi, playing mostly for food, began drumming with a near permanent smile.
The dragonborn, tuning her lute, perked up at the sound. She began bobbing her head with the beat, slowly approaching the other musician. Ever smiling, he looked at her and nodded along. Strumming a made-up melody in time, the dragonborn's addition attracted more attention. Rather than walking by, townspeople started to linger.
This caught the attention of a human who was practicing her panflute, looking for a good spot to set up. She watched and listened to the new duo until their improvised song came to an end, resulting in light applause from a small crowd. This sparked an idea. The human had never received applause for playing alone. She approached from the side, watching as a sweet roll, some wildflowers, and even a few coppers were placed in the genasi's bag. She observed the two speaking, seeming to agree on playing a commonly known tune. As they began, the human stepped closer, playing her panflute in harmony.
The genasi's grin was now on her, and she raised her eyebrows questioningly, asking permission. He nodded in understanding, and the three worked the now growing crowd.

Mid-day they broke to count their spoils, shaking hands and exchanging introductions. Pumba Itstaty, Raiyassa Caavylteradyn, and Flicker Greenridge got on well quickly, at least in part due to the profitable nature of their union. With the coin from their performances they now had enough to stay the night at an inn, or at least a tavern with a stage to earn more before bed. They spent the afternoon searching for a barkeep who would take them, then mocking up their first set list.
Pumba was a curious sort who would open the night and start to draw people in. Raiya would carry the show with both strings and vocals. Flicker agreed to close out the show with a song, and that evening The Bardless was formed.
--------------------
After being on her panflute all night, the human stepped up front for their first final musical number. She cleared her throat and looked out at the tavern's patrons. Raiya played, Pumba drummed, and Flicker sang.
"In a neat little town they call Greenest
Apprentice to a trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
Had I spent in that neat little town.
A sad misfortune came o'er me
Which caused me to stray from my kin
Far away from my friends and relations
All due to one mighty dragon.
The skies they lit up like fire,
I thought it was surely the end.
Now I travel the land with my travelling band
Until I can get my revenge!
Thank you! Don't forget to tip your server, we're The Bardless and we'll be here all tenday, pending approval. Goodnight!"

The group did not get approval. And so, they headed east to try their luck. To an entirely new town. To Phandalin.
