St Astras' Downs
An actually not-so-bad community established hastily with the leftover materials from the construction of Cloakacre and Wakecrest, St Astras' Downs is the crowded urban core supplying the necessary workers and servants for the more upscale Tenth communities.
St Astras' Downs is constantly under construction by the highly motivated and optimistic lower classes, but constrained by the lack of uniformity of available materials and the fact that they are forbidden from engaging in commerce. Ironically, despite their excellence in most architectural matters, Tenth architects miscalculated in placing the two finer communities further to the south, where one would expect the finest views and freshest air. Having failed to consider that they were building upon a live animal, the urban planners did not factor in that the other communities would be more susceptible to inertia and seasickness, and that the smell from the back of a Zaratan is not always a neutral factor.
Indeed, the Downs are a much nicer place to live, situated on one of the finest parcels of real estate on the shell. It is an unfortunate waste that the beauty of Cloakacre is tainted by its location, and that St Astras' location is tainted by the economic condition of its residents.
Still, if you look closely, some of those houses really are getting cozy these days. New roofs, Fox Pine floorboards. Though the doors in new builds seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Strange.
