Chapter II: Races

I am not afraid. I was born to do this.
— Joan of Arc
Every hero has to come from somewhere. Your race helps define backstory and history and provides generalized appearance, attributes, skills, and features.

RACIAL TRAITS

Each race provides a stepping stone for the features of your hero. You gain a number of traits from your race, which are defined below.
ABILITY MODIFIERS
A race’s ability modifiers reflect its potential strengths and weaknesses. When you choose this race, you adjust your Ability Scores as listed.
BLOODLINE BENEFITS
Members of your race are born with natural Skills, Proficiencies, and toughness.
LANGUAGES
Members of your race know the Languages listed under language.
LIFESPAN
On average, members of your race live this long. Unless otherwise noted, the maturation process follows human norms.
SIZE
Most races are of Medium size. Races of different sizes have their details listed here.
SPEED
Some races are faster than others. Your base movement speed, along with any other natural movement form you possess, is listed here.
VISION
Some races modify your hero's vision. Unmodified vision allows you to see without limit in bright and dim light, though you suffer Unreliability on Perception attempts in dim light. In darkness, you cannot see.
TRAITS
Your race's traits provide the archetypical features that separate a hero of your ancestry from another.

Alternate Ancestries

Races in this chapter are presented in traditional roleplaying style. However, not all heroes are stereotypes. If you wish to customize your ancestry, follow these steps.
1. CHOOSE AN ANCESTRY
Choose a race. You gain one language and the lifespan, size, speed, vision, and traits of that race, and are considered a creature of that subtype for purposes of effects that apply to creature type.
2. CHOOSE YOUR ABILITY MODIFIERS
Choose one of the following options:
  • Increase an ability score by 1.
  • Decrease an ability score by 1 and increase two ability scores by 1.
3. CHOOSE YOUR BLOODLINE BENEFITS
Pick 4 bloodline benefits. Options preceded by an asterisk count as 2 bloodline benefits.
  • Learn a Language
  • Gain the Run, Perform, or Culture skill or a narrowly defined skill such as Survival (Tundra) or Engineering (Traps)
  • Choose charm, compulsion, daze, disease, divination, glamer, figment, phantasm, polymorph, or sleep. You gain Reliability on defenses against such effects and can make a Luck Roll to resist such effects that would normally not allow you to.
  • *Become Trained in a weapon group, light armors, or shields
  • *Gain a Skill or Proficiency
  • *Gain Advantage on Luck Rolls to avoid bad fortune
  • *Choose enchantment, fatigue, fear, illusion, necrotic, paralysis, poison, psychic, radiant, or transmutation. You gain Reliability on defenses against such effects and can make a Luck Roll to resist such effects that would normally not allow you to.
  • *Choose a Non-Physical Damage type. You gain Resistance to it.
  • *Increase your Hit Points by 1 per level.
  • *When an effect would cause you to lose a hero's surge, gain the ability to make a Luck Roll to not lose it.
