Trast

A continent reclaimed from nature, strewn with ruins of lost civilization. A land of wild dangers and ancient mystery, yet legends hold that this continent settled just 200 years ago was the birthplace of civilization on Dynos. The settlements here are still independent and growing, with naught but trade agreements to bind them. Ruins of vast cities are spread out across the lands, massive stone arches dot the landscape, but few clues have been found as to who created them or for what purpose.

Geography

The northern half of the continent is wreathed by three mountain ranges: the Setting Ridge, Adamant Mountains, and Dawnslight Ridge. This divides the region into two temperate valleys which house most of Trast's settlments.   In the center of the continent lays the Heart of Trast; its largest river branches out into a massive swamp on the coast, south of the Adamant Mountains. To the southeast of the Heart is a wide spanning plain, and below that is the Rusted Dunes and Arid Heights. The Serpent Archipelago runs along the length Trast's southeast shore, providing a safe channel and rapid current between the area's two notable ports: Skipalon and Port Rinehart.

History

Nearly 200 years ago, in 398 PIC specifically, ships from Iqari returned to Trast to re-establish contact. However, all they found was a continent devoid of civilization. Where they landed became the town of Settler's Landing, and more people later arrived to set out exploring and expanding. When finally the explorers did discover the ruins of four gargantuan cities around the continent, they were shocked to discover the ruins either too dangerous to investigate, or purged of any records about who lived there or what happened to them. They also discovered a massive, sealed off cemetery bearing the markings of Teloiv  east of the Heart of Trast; strange animate statues prevent anyone from entering the now named Garden of Teloiv.   Since the re-settling, the various villages, towns, and cities have decided to remain ultimately independent. Trade agreements between them ensure that resources are exchanged where they are needed. Conflict between the settlements rarely arises; most Trastons agree that defending against the environment's natural dangers is far more important than throwing away lives getting into senseless wars.   Roughly a century ago, a necromancer terrorized the western valley. After they were defeated, cremation became the standard funeral practice: the body of the deceased would be burned on a pyre during the wake, then any persisting bones would be ground and urned, leaving no remains for a necromancer to raise. Potters are a safe job in the region due to this practice.
