Order of the Shield

The Order of the Shield is an organisation of Knights employed by the crown to protect the citizens of the land. Their HQ is in the nation’s capital - Kureta City, but their presence is known throughout the land. The Order effectively serve as the police, protectors, and military of Kureta.   Members of the Order are known as 'Knights of the Shield'. These knights will carry out a range of duties, with rotas to determine where they will be required each day. Those who have the right skills and work hard can move up into higher ranks within the organisation.

Structure

Town/City Watch

Involves manning the gates or walls of a town/city, patrolling the streets, guarding prisons and generally keeping the peace.

Investigator

Crimes that are reported to the Order will be looked into by an Investigator. These knights are given a magical notebook, which records everything they write into a duplicate notebook at the Order's HQ.

Royal Guard

The Royal Guard are only found in Kureta City, they are tasked with protection of the palace, and the members of the royal family. This can be anything from standing guard within the palace walls, to accompanying a royal when they travel. The Royal Guard are given red and gold chainmail to wear when on duty, to keep with the royal colours of Kureta.

Templar

The Templars have sworn an oath to the crown to serve until death, and in return are granted divine Magic (believed to be the blessing of The Goddess). The Templars are usually reserved for matters of the arcane or supernatural persuasion, whereas a standard Knight of the Shield would deal with the more mundane incidents of the land. Templars could be dispatched if a wizard were wreaking havoc in the city, or a magical creature attacked a village, for example.

Captain

The rank of Captain is awarded to knights who have proven themselves capable leaders, as well as fighters. A Captain will be positioned as the head of a HQ in one of Kureta's villages (those that are large enough to have a HQ).

General

From Captain, a Knight can be promoted to the rank of General. A General will be positioned as the head of a HQ in one of Kureta's towns.

Commander

The rank of Commander is awarded to knights who have proven themselves time and time again. A Commander will be positioned as the head of the HQ's in one of Kureta's cities (excluding Nakaba who have their own systems of law and protection).

Knight-Commander

The Knight-Commander is the head of the Order of the Shield, answerable only to the crown. The current Knight-Commander is an Elf called Knight-Commander Taenaran. Taenaran is the longest serving Knight in the organisation, most of which is made up of humans and other shorter-lived species. Taenaran spends most of her time at the HQ in Kureta City, where she organises and instructs the Knights.

Public Agenda

The Order of the Shield's primary goal is to defend the citizens of Kureta. Members of the organisation are given martial training as well as lessons in dealing with civilians, all to ensure the safety of the country.

Assets

Across the country, The Order of the Shield consists of roughly 3,000 town guards, not including officers, investigators and other high-ranking members.   In addition to this, the Order has a few thousand soldiers who do not carry out town/city duties, but and kept in reserve in case of war.

History

The Order of the Shield were officially established in 625 KCB, after the country began to recover from the effects of war with Sonkai.   The organisation was founded by the ruling queen at the time, who recruited soldiers to create an official form of protection for Kureta. The Order of the Shield slowly grew, eventually becoming the creators and upholders of the law, as well as the country's army and general guard.   The Order has been called upon twice to fight for Kureta in times of war, once in 716 KCB in the war with Polemis and again in 962 KCB in the war with Nakaba. The Order of the Shield proved effective in both wars, with minimal losses for Kureta in both cases.   In times of peace, the Order maintains a vigilant guard over the country. The Order continues to wage a war on crime in its larger cities, with efforts to take down the Jagged Blades always in motion.

Enemies

Being the law and order of the land, the Order of the Shield naturally despise the Silent Owls assassins. Unfortunately for them, the mysterious guild have proven too difficult to deal with - and thus most (or all) of their assassinations go unpunished.
