Mire's Edge

A sizable town located in the heart of Serpent Mire surrounded by humid swamp and thick foliage.

Demographics

A diverse populace, representatives of most common races can be found among the folk of Mire’s Edge. Hard working, and fond of their jovial local lord, the townsfolk have prospered for several decades under his leadership. Many of them remember how tough life was before the truce with the local lizardfolk tribe was brokered, and nobody wants to see a return to those days.

Defences

It is encircled by a rough palisade with five small watchtowers. The walls are patrolled by a force of around 30 trained guards and a force of about 100 militia from the local townsfolk can be raised in times of crisis.

Industry & Trade

The sugar cane fields are the livelihood of the town, and most of the population does some kind of work related to it.

Infrastructure

The main street leading up to the plantation house is cobblestone, but was never finished since they realized what a terrible idea building with stone was. The road keeps flooding, and the cobbles are perpetually made slick by damp moss, and vegetation is constantly trying to push up from between the stones. Most of the plantation is traversed through slightly elevated wooden boardwalks. Wood is the material of choice for buildings here, and there are a collection of modest homes and local businesses scattered to the east side of the main road, with the cane fields that are the major source of the town’s income situated to the west.

History

Surrounded by humid swamp and thick foliage, the settlement of Mire’s Edge was founded several decades ago by an enterprising lord, and member of the Ordlebrandt family  with an eye for commodities – in this case, sugar cane. Earning him a great deal of financial security, Mire’s Edge only grew to real prominence in the lord’s later years, when he and his household became permanent residents, a prosperous town steadily growing around them.
When the settlement was smaller it attracted very little attention from the various denizens of the swamp. It soon became clear that a neighboring lizardfolk tribe had been watching the growing town with wary eyes, the town limits rapidly encroaching on the boundaries of their territory - boundaries that are not always clearly communicated to the soft-skinned folk. As the settlement grew in size, the inscrutable and alien tolerances of the lizardfolk reached a breaking point, and the Stinging Mist tribe began to push back aggressively against the expansion of the settlement. Seeing travelers as prey and attacking caravans, they caused a great deal of concern among the town, until the lord of Mire’s Edge came to an agreement with the shamans of the Stinging Mist – a regular exchange of food, goods and occasional items of worked metal that would secure safe passage for trade and travel to and from the settlement.
This arrangement was agreeable for both parties, and lasted for a number of years. Recently, tensions have begun to grow once more.
