Ever suspicious Nightshade checks the Yeddims' harnesses for tampering, but while Thunderer's harness is older and a bit worn it just means it requires extra maintenance. While scouting ahead Nightshade and Scrub Rider are attacked by Hatra, essentially a pack of carnivorous flying squirrels, and while Nightshade prevails rider and mount are both badly injured.
She later sounds out Rushes in a Pond, badly, but determines he is as much a barbarian as she is and has a special shrieking arrow he will use in an emergency to alert everyone.
After Bertrum Blumenthal treats the injured the caravan pushes on to reach the town of Oakhollow.
