Session 20230413 Pemmican
General Summary
Bertrum's Journal
My quill scratches upon the parchment as I pen the events of our recent journey, which has taken us to the settlement of the Illuminated one and beyond. With Nightshade and Lyris at my side, we accompanied Itoco, the skilled pilot of the magic air boat, to deliver a tonne of cut timber. In conversation with him, I sensed that he may be Dragon Blooded, but his knowledge of his powers was limited.
Upon reaching the settlement, we traded the timber for food and "First Blood" vodka, which proved to be a profitable exchange. I spoke to the Mistress of the Grey Wall, who expressed her interest in obtaining more timber in exchange for sustenance. With the trade concluded, we headed back to Gavirat.
Upon our return, I set about constructing animal pens that would fit inside the magic air boat, and arranged for a hunting party to go to Tallinin to gather goats that we had heard of in the area. The boat could accommodate up to 20 goats, if they could be found.
As we journeyed, I busied myself with the task of enchanting a barrel to purify water. I intended to use purified water in the vodka distilling process to enhance its flavor. Nightshade spoke to Itoco about his painful past, and how he gained his Dragon Blood powers by rescuing some children.
We eventually caught up with the caravan heading to Kajeth, where we planned to produce the winter provisions for Ardeleth. I finished the enchanted barrel on our journey and also crafted magnificent cloaks using the hides of the Tree Singers and some magically shaped gems from the Ice walkers. Both Nightshade and I now have a cloak, and the final one may be sold if Lyris does not desire it.
Upon our arrival in Kajeth, I suggested that Fruitful Scruplence take a load of food back to Ardeleth, as it may be a while before we had sufficient provisions to deliver. Our business partners informed us that although the delivery business was not particularly profitable, it was enough to keep them afloat. I shared my plan to produce highly nutritious, energy-packed food with our partners, and they suggested that I speak to the military kitchens about renting some space to set up production. To my delight, they agreed to rent me some space and even assisted me in finding local merchants and prices for ingredients. If the product lived up to expectations, they even offered to purchase some for the commandos. I christened my recipe "Road Travelling Pemmican" and worked diligently to perfect it. It is concentrated, palatable, has a long shelf life, and provides a great deal of energy. It is slightly more expensive to produce than fresh food, but it will be valuable to many people. However, there is still much to be done. I need to hire a Business Manager/Chef to oversee operations and possibly some kitchen staff. The military kitchens were impressed with my product and have agreed to purchase some for the commandos. With these sales and the profits from selling "First Blood" vodka, I am confident that the business is sustainable and will produce sufficient surplus to ship to Ardeleth. As I set down my quill, I reflect upon the journey that has led me to this point. There are many challenges ahead, but I am determined to meet them head-on and emerge victorious. Such is the nature of the life we lead, and I would not have it any other way.
