Session 20230407 Concert of Death
General Summary
Bertrum's Journal
Oh, what a day it has been! My heart beats with excitement as I recall the events of the past hours, for they have been filled with both wonder and peril. Our adventures in Ardeleth continue, and each day we learn more about the land and its inhabitants. Today, we faced a new challenge as we encountered the mysterious Tree Singers, but we prevailed, and our victory fills me with pride.
Our day began with a discussion with Blood on the Snow, who was unsure about building towns in Ardeleth. He believed that a nomadic life would be better for the people, but I tried to convince him otherwise. I suggested that at least a small town could be built as a staging area for importing and distributing food. We must prepare for the future, I told him, and he eventually saw the wisdom in my words.
Blood on the Snow then flew off in his hawk form to investigate the people who were now populating Fallen Lapis, leaving me to oversee the final construction of the new lumber-mill. With my metal shaping enchantment, I produced an exceptional saw-blade that would make the mill's work more efficient. Afterward, I began work on a basic workshop with the help of Yamak. It will take several weeks to produce, but I am sure that it will make future construction tasks easier.
As the day progressed, we decided to investigate the farmland around the small destroyed town of Gavired. It was overgrown, but we saw no large trees, so we used a controlled fire to clear it. Nightshade coordinated the efforts throughout the night, and it went very successfully. With the land cleared, I built innovative plows that could be operated by people, as there are no work animals in the local area. The people of the town began preparing the farmland for planting, but as yet we have no seed to plant.
The day took a strange turn when we were approached by a mother and father who had lost their child, Lilly. They said they had last seen her at a concert, which was very strange because I had not been aware of any concert. Upon investigation, we found that the villagers had been going to the edge of the forest each morning to listen to singing coming from the forest. We rounded up a group of armed men and headed off into the forest to try and track down the girl. Nightshade had been a little blunt in her original dealings with the father, so he had already run off into the forest looking for her. Nightshade was able to follow the girl's tracks until we began hearing singing coming from the forest. We caught sight of the Tree Singers high in the trees and the girl standing transfixed, watching them. As we approached the creatures, they became agitated, and when we attacked them with bows, they fled. We returned the girl to her grateful mother, but then had to go track down the father who had run off into the forest. We informed the villagers about the Tree Singers and warned them to avoid them and their music and to come and inform us if they heard it again. Later, we were approached by someone who said the town watch's supervisors for the night shift had all come down with food poisoning and they asked if we could fill in. Nightshade and I agreed and got some sleep before the shift started. It was not easy staying awake, but I managed to work on a few designs to keep me occupied.
The morning brought with it the sweet sound of singing from the forest, a sound that filled my heart with dread. Nightshade and I consulted on what action to take, and after careful consideration, we decided to use me as bait. My heart raced with anticipation as I entered the forest, hoping to lure the Tree Singers into an attack. As I approached, their sweet melody filled my ears, but before I could react, they had swarmed me. Luckily, our party was more than capable, and we swiftly took them down. Their hides are a brilliant white, and I can already imagine the warm winter cloaks that they will make. Victorious and exhausted, we returned to the village to rest, only to be interrupted by the return of the magical airboat. The pilot spoke of a disturbance in the forest, a walled settlement that had suddenly appeared. Intrigued, we asked him to take us there, and before long, we stood before towering stone walls. Despite our initial hesitation, we were welcomed with open arms by the Mistress of the Grey Wall, a religious leader who promised to help the people of Ardeleth. The settlement was bustling with activity, and we agreed to a trade of cut timber for food to help our village survive the winter. Upon returning to Gavired, we found that Blood on the Snow had arrived and had investigated the Fallen Lapis, but with no answers. We told him of our new trade agreement and the Solar Exalted, and he agreed it was a good idea. Our next mission is to take the first shipment of timber to the settlement, along with some vodka, before catching up with the caravan on their journey to Kajeth. Another adventure awaits, and I can't wait to see what the future holds. Yours truly, Bertrum Blumenthall
