Golthien

"The Unconquered Lands..."

GOLTHIEN   Far from the twin continents of Hariel, across the World Sea, lies a land both untamed and conquered, vibrant and blasted... Golthien.   The only true nation state to the near east of Golthien is Lentokk, home of the Lentokki God Kings (the Deep Lords). Silent for many hundreds of years, they now openly claim to have made a breakthrough. Their promised god, "The Sleeper in Ice", has made its presence known, allegedly imbuing the god kings with immortality. It is said the sleeper, Krytuss, is an Eldritch God, and the only one to actually escape Celene before its internal collapse. It made it as far as the western edge of the untamed Ultima Thule before it succumbed to its frozen wastes, sinking into the icy depths of the Demon Isles, until allegedly woken by the God Kings of late. Now, at the rapidly (magically) thawing edge of Ultima Thule, beneath the ”Minus Zero Lands” of the Demon Isles, it waits, and the Lentokki have the promise of a returned God behind which to muster an army…   Faldrighel, an eldritch god from the Outer Dark, had his essence stolen by Krytuss “the corrupt, the manipulator, the navigator.” And Krytuss, having seen the depths of the realms beyond space and time, has revealed a secret, they say, to the god kings. The knowledge of which transformed them into the immortal beings they now claim to be.   Xrie Palax, "The Deep One", is the arch-lich lord of Lentokk. He is the blessed of Krytuss, keeper of his infernal green flame. His throne, The Alabast, lies within a pit of supreme darkness at the blackened heart of Lentokk. A sinkhole (with a diameter of a two miles) where the land ate itself rather than be trodden upon by the eldritch lords.   Today, most of Golthien is a blasted wasteland. But it wasn't always that way. Once it contained lands as diverse as those in the West. The original kingdom of Lentokk was peaceful, and run by a benevolent council of elders. It's holdings spread far and wide across the eastern lands. That was until after The Great Sundering, when the holy mountain of Celene was robbed of its powers, so many years past.   The Gods Kings (powerful necromancers and warlocks who both serve and claim relation to eldritch Gods known as The Old Ones), were directly responsible for the destruction of the once powerful mountain. Their greed reduced it to mere rock, and many say the gods who once called Celene their home, died in the magical collapse of the mountain’s great interior cities of splendor. They crossed the World Sea and quickly conquered the unprepared nation of Lentokk, creating the vile nation of the same name that we know of today.   Rumors say the God Kings of the east (the lords of the deep, the deep lords, the eldritch tyrants) are returning west in order to assert dominion for their ancient masters. They have a new power, an elder god. This is the rumor, at least. They are perhaps behind the collecting of magic, as it empowers them and is the only thing that can destroy them. Many say they will target the Southron territories of Hariel Minuta first, a blitz attack to capture or wipe out the seat of magic in the west. This attack will not be seen as a big loss in the north, where magic is distrusted greatly. But if an usurper king (possibly the Baron Rocha) decides to break with peace and create his own, opposing empire (in league with forces from the east), it is possible the north could unite under his rule (especially if it means the destruction of the magicians of Varuum).   The Lentokki do not, however, stand unopposed on their own soil. The city-state of Glointhal seceded from Lentokk after it changed hands. Glointhal became a haven for rebels fighting against the rule of the God Kings. Naturally, the Lentokki would like nothing more than to eliminate this thorn in their side, and it's only a matter of time before they make (another) attempt to take the city-state.   Other places of note in the east include the mecca of gambling, Varistane, and the haunted region known as Barovia.   Barovia sits on the west coast of Golthien, forming the western edge of the Bastard Lands. The ocean between Hariel and Golthien is the World Sea (aka the Endless Sea, Magnus Oceanus, The Gods Pool, The Long Drink, The Hopeless Sea).

Ties to That What Once Came Before…

On Gothenya: Golthien is sometimes referred to as The New World, as it is as far removed from the cradle of civilization as a major landmass can be.

Geography

Once a thriving continent, lush with a wide variety of life, now Golthien has been largely blasted through the misuse of The Art. As one travels further east, signs of the continent's original flora and fauna (pre-Sundering) emerge, as the Lentokki's influence only reaches so far... for now.
