Stagford Wood
Stagford Wood is a vast and ancient forest in the Kingdom of Wicklow on the Isle of Glanmoor, shrouded in magic and mystery. The towering trees, some centuries old, form a dense canopy that shelters the forest floor from direct sunlight, creating a world of shadowy paths, vibrant underbrush, and the soft glow of enchanted flora. The forest is home to the majestic elven city of A'vamel, which lies along its eastern edge, seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape.
The wood is named for the sacred stags that roam freely within its depths, revered by the elves and locals alike as symbols of the Old Gods and protectors of the forest. It is said that these stags are touched by the fey, their silver antlers shimmering with ancient magic, and spotting one is considered a rare and significant omen of the gods' favor.
Stagford Wood has strong ties to The Feywild, with numerous portals rumored to exist throughout the forest, though their locations are known only to the elves and select fey creatures. This connection to the fey gives the forest an otherworldly feel, with strange lights often seen dancing among the trees and the soft sound of ethereal music carried on the breeze. The elves of A'vamel have long been the guardians of the wood, ensuring that the delicate balance between the mortal and fey realms is maintained.
The Old Gods are deeply revered within the forest, especially Aine, The Elvendawn, deity of spring and the fey, whose presence is strongly felt in the flourishing beauty of the wood. Elven druids and priests conduct rituals within sacred groves, calling upon Aine to bless the land with vitality and ensure the continued prosperity of both the forest and its inhabitants. Shrines dedicated to Aine and other nature deities, such as Ildross, The Wild King, god of animals and the wilderness, can be found throughout Stagford Wood, often marked by ancient standing stones entwined with vines and adorned with offerings.
While the forest is a sanctuary for the elves and the fey, it is also a place of potential danger for those unfamiliar with its secrets. The paths through Stagford Wood often shift, and travelers can easily find themselves lost or ensnared by the illusions of fey tricksters. However, the elves and their fey allies ensure that those who respect the forest and its denizens can find safe passage and protection.
The forest is a source of wonder and inspiration, not only for the elves of A'vamel but also for the humans in the nearby town of Dunleer, with whom they maintain a cautious but respectful relationship.
