The Shimmering Gulf is both well travelled and treacherous. The sea lane from the rest of Europa has relatively calm and clear waters. However, those who stray too close to the troll filled Moores often find themselves attacked by sea trolls. Vesten clans often send summer hunting parties to clear troll dens that are too close to the villages and harbors.
Rumors and Tales:
• The sea-trolls will, at times, organize around a leader that will coordinate raids upon ships. When a troll warlord shows up like this, Vesten hunting parties make it a priority to take them down.
• Shallow-water merfolk and porpoises swim in these waters, often playing and chasing each other through the waves. These merfolk are friendly to travelers and visitors.
• There is a rowboat race annually down the waters. It is a big deal and widely popular, with people even from other nations coming to compete.
• Legends speak of a cryptid that allegedly lives in these waters. They call it 'Big Ol' Heimskaar', and it's supposedly some kind of extinct marine reptile. No one has been able to prove its existence yet.
• This gulf is a yearly route for salmon when returning upstream to spawn in rivers. Salmon fishing is big business at this time of year, but regulated closely by Vesten authorities to prevent overfishing.
• The Shimmering Gulf is mentioned in a several centuries old saga written by Vesten skalds. The saga tells of a warrior who traveled through the gulf chasing down the man who killed his father.
