Storykeeper

Qualifications

There are no official qualifications required to become Storykeeper but the position is not awarded lightly. Storykeepers have tens of years of experience of being within the Storytellers path, and have proved themselves highly adept at their craft.

Appointment

The passing of the mantle to the next Storyteller as someone steps up to be a Storykeeper is known as Exchanging Words. The ceremony is predominantly for the Storyteller, but is significant to the appointment of the Storykeeper as it shows them officially stepping into that responsibility.

Duties

The duties of the Storykeeper include spending time with Storylearners and Storylisteners and working with them to help them understand the role of the Storyteller in the community. They help them learn their craft and understand how stories should be told and created.

Responsibilities

The Storykeeper is responsible for remembering the stories they have been told and ensuring that they get passed down to the next generation. They are also responsible for teaching Storylearners and Storylisteners and helping them progress to the position of Storyteller. They advise these Storytellers and help them to perfect their craft.   They may also help advise the Ruler.

Cultural Significance

Storykeepers are part of the heart of Vellich culture. They hold with them the stories of the Vellich and ensure they are passed on to the next generation.
