Vellich Profession Paths
Role of the Pathways
The Profession Paths are crucial to the Vellich World View and their way of life. There six main paths, each of which have a unique role to play in the life of a Vellich settlement.Rulers
Rulers oversee the settlement. They ensure the administration is done and are tasked with making decisions on behalf of the settlement.Storytellers
Storytellers are the backbone of any Vellich settlement. They share news, remind them of their history and act as a counsellor or coach to anyone in need.Bearers
Bearers are in charge of the conception, birth and raising of children within the settlement. They act as surrogates, midwives, nurses, nannys, friends and teachers all in one.Grifters
Grifters are the builders and the creators of the settlement. They make everything from buildings and roads, to food and finery.Wranglers
Wranglers deal with animals, both in terms of looking after livestock and removing critters from places they should not be. They are problem solvers and are sometimes called upon to wrangle unruly children or deal with crises.Providers
Providers provide for the settlement. They collect the materials that are needed by the Grifters and ensure that the settlement has what it needs to survive and thrive.Structure
Culture
The Vellich World View is very focused on professions and the role of the individual within society. A person is not judged on their ability to climb the proverbial ladder, but more on the effort they put into whatever role they play.
For example, if a person enters the Rulers pathway and then remains in the Administrators position they are welcome to do so for as long as they like.
Public Agenda
The whole of Vellichian society works around the profession pathways. The aim is to keep each settlement running and ensure everyone has a place. Every settlement relies on this structure to work, and smaller settlements may encourage young people to choose a particular path based on the requirements of the settlement.
The Rulers in each settlement ensure that each of the other pathways has what they need, and the head of each pathway manages those within their own profession area.
Assets
Most of the pathways have their own buildings, depending on need. For example:
Rulers | Ruler's Tower |
---|---|
Bearers | Bearer's House |
Grifters | Light House |
Providers | Gatherer's Holdings |
History
The pathways originated in Zaranta (which later became part of The Vell), and were said to have come about organically. The people of Dorillin, the other nearby settlement, saw how well the system worked and decided to try it for themselves. When it worked there as well, the two settlements decided to send their Storytellers to other settlements to explain how it worked. Within a few years, variations of the structure was being used across the continent.
It wasn't until the Story Vault was set up, that the Travelling Vaults started systematically travelling the planet, and sharing advice between settlements. This allowed for the standardisation of the structure which is used today.
Dreamspeakers were never part of the official profession pathways. The rise in the role of the Storytellers caused a dicline in the Dreamspeakers, and by the time these pathways were being shared across the continent by Storytellers, Dreamspeakers had all but ceased to be.
