Session 10: "The Citadel"

Written by Inominatus

General Summary

Gaining their bearings after their arrival at The Citadel, they immediately became aware of a hostile welcoming party of Illuminated guards and an Illuminated Priest.   The Ka-tet defeat The Illuminated guards at the entrance after a difficult battle, facing damaging fire spells from the priest.   The party use the defeated guards' uniforms to enter the complex, and successfully carry off the deception to bypass other guard posts watching out for trouble.   Moving inside the castle Arvid discovers magical wardings on a lever used to open some 'Pork Cutlets' preventing entry. They successfully moved past this trap, only for Arvid to discover further traps on stairs leading to a higher part of the fortress.   Eventually the party reached a Temple of Asmodeus within which they found Toranna, just as she was summoning an Infernal Legionary, along side Dror, an Illuminated Priest.   After being struck by several bolts from Reign of Anger, Toranna loses control of the legionary, and after she is slain by a barrage of spells and attacks the devil takes her to the Nine Hells.   Dror surrenders and tells the party that the ruby on the altar is the key to the citadel's forcefield, and of the secret door to the room of the commander - the traitorous Zerth, Mi'rar'i. He hopes to escape from the Plane of Fire with the group.   They also take an alter service set (Dak'kon claims this), a chalice, some candlesticks, and a dagger. The alter also had a secret compartment, and this contained 10x clot charms, 4x Blood Charm, 6x Charcoal Charm, and 1x Heart Charm.   With little time of remaining safety after the Ruby is taken, the Ka-Tet storm the Commander's room, where they are met by Mi'rar'i and three monk cultists.   Dror turns stag, like a good Illuminati, and after attacking the party, tries and succedds in activating the portal back to the Sigil Mortuary.   The gith Mi'rar'i proves puissant in spells and battle, utilising her own Karach blade in an attempt to delete Dak'kon. However, the Ka-tet manage to disrupt her concentration.   Eilana, Dak'kon, and Eilana all fall in the battle at various times, but ultimately they defeat the cultists and the gith, while Dror escapes through the portal.   Mi'rar'i wakes after using a secreted heart charm and uses plane shift to flee, leaving her shattered karach behind.   The Ka-tet race for the portal, with Arvid dragging a trunk of goodies through with him, where they find a Dustman factotum with two wraiths having apprehended the fleeing Dror.   The ashen priest reveals during interrogation that the plan of The Illuminated's leader, Green Marvent, was to take barmies and bubbers, convince them they had died and gone to their final rest to be returned by their favourite power as a spy in another faction. This way, The Illuminated will have moles in every faction and the knowledge to take ultimate control of Sigil.   In a heart breaking coda, he reveals that the Citadel's holding cells contained four innocents who were going through the Resurrection program and who would have been incinerated a few minutes after Dror took the ruby.   The saddened Ka-tet report back to Gendramak and the Bleakers factol Llar, who congratulate them on their success and take the sacrifice of the innocents as proof of their philosophy.   Esmae and Gregory share silent tears in their quarters for the night.   The Ka-tet gain the thanks of the Bleak Cabal, The Dustmen, and the Doomguard for unraveling The Illuminated plot, but no doubt also gained the undying vengeance of Mi'rar'i and Green Marvent.   THIRD LEVEL IS ATTAINED !!!!!   Session end
