3. Tamen’s Hijacked Ale - Hommlet

Virgil Tamen, the esteemed braumeister of Tamen Brewery, is in dire straits. A recent shipment of his renowned ale, destined for eager customers, was hijacked by bandits on the road. Ostler Gundigoot, the innkeeper at the Welcome Wench, suggests that the party speak with Virgil and Canon Terjon to gather more information about these brazen bandits and recover the stolen goods. The quest to reclaim Tamen's ale will lead the party into dangerous territory, confronting the bandits who threaten the region.

Tamen Brewery

Perched atop one of Hommlet's few hills at the end of Brewer's Road, 18: Tamen Brewery is a symbol of the village's brewing tradition. The brewery's hilltop location offers a scenic view of Hommlet and easy access for both villagers and travelers seeking quality brews.

The Hijacking Incident

Recently, a shipment of Tamen’s ale was hijacked by bandits on the road outside Hommlet. The bandits made off with eight barrels, including two of aged whiskey, ten years in the making. Fortunately, the driver escaped, but the loss has shaken Virgil and the community.

Bandit Activity

The hijacking is part of a broader pattern of banditry threatening the region. The bandits, who have been growing bolder, seem to be operating from a stronghold in the old Moathouse to the northeast of the village. The party’s task is to track down these bandits, recover the stolen goods, and bring the culprits to justice.

Virgil Quest Offer

Virgil’s intense gaze locks onto you as he sets his cup down with a deliberate motion. “Perhaps you can be of service,” he begins, his voice low but urgent. “You’ve likely heard of my troubles by now. Not long ago, one of my shipments was hijacked by a group of bandits. They struck on the open road, with no regard for the law. Eight barrels gone—most of it ale, but two of them were aged whiskey, ten years old.”   He leans forward, wagging a finger at you, his frustration barely contained. “Luckily, my driver got away; they probably didn’t want to halt all trade, just take what they could. But these bastards are getting bolder.” His voice hardens as he offers a proposition. “If you can track down that lost shipment, I’ll pay you 5 gold for each barrel you bring back.”   Virgil gestures towards the door, his tone heavy with concern. “If you decide to go after the bandits, speak with Terjon at the church. He’s been talking about rallying the militia, but Rufus and Burne have cautioned against it. The bandits have kept their distance from the village so far, and they’re worried about leaving Hommlet vulnerable. Terjon might have more details—he’s been trying to get to the bottom of this.”   As you agree to take on the task, Virgil’s expression softens slightly, gratitude mixing with the anger in his eyes. “I thank you for watching out for my supplies. We put a lot of work into those barrels, and it’s infuriating to see them stolen by some lowlife bandits.” He spits on the floor in disgust before continuing. “Rufus and Burne, they’ve been here about three years. They were adventurers of some repute—defeated a large bandit force near Verbobonc, earned the Viscount’s favor. They even say they killed a green dragon in the Kron Hills. Now they’re overseeing the construction of a small castle on the east side of the village, near their tower. Rufus commands the troops, and Burne’s a mage. Both good men, from what I can tell—though cautious. Maybe that’s why they’ve been so successful, or maybe success has changed them. Who knows?”   Virgil shrugs, pondering your question. “I guess the Viscount wants more of a presence here. Why the lords do what they do—who can say? But if it helps keep the village safe, I’m all for it. You’re right—a castle is easier to defend.”   Raising his hand, Virgil suddenly points to a nearby barrel. “The markings,” he says, moving over to the desk. He pulls out some papers, tears off a piece, and scribbles down a series of numbers. “Here they are. The stock numbers for the stolen barrels—1045 through 1052. If you find any of those, you’ll know you’ve found the bandits that robbed me.” His tone is final, his determination clear. The task is set, and the weight of it hangs in the air as he hands you the list.
