Underbelch

This place took the brunt of it when the horrors of The Unders poured out. Its never been a particularly desirable place to live, more people are forced here than come here of choice. But it gets them close to work and wage in the Ashworks and the authorities don’t oft bother enforce rules here, except on the bridge where trade must flow.   Within the shantytown around the mouth of the cave people have found a way to eek out a living. Most of the structures here are held together by luck and patience and little else. Although rain doesn’t tend to be a cause of flooding here, when something happens upriver that increases the river level, this will be the first place to really notice it. The entirely of the Underbelch is below river level and it is only the old retaining wall that keeps the river from overrunning its banks and flooding this entire neighborhood. Even with the wall, during seasons with more flow from the river the ground here becomes more swamp than street. It is customary to see the residents here wearing skins wrapped around their feet to try to keep them dry.   The typical greeting for a Belcher is a low loud rumble and roar.
