Iron Dominion

The Iron Dominion is a country located on the Faylen Continent. The Dominion was founded by Gregor Ferrous and the Iron Rebels, a militant group of workers and artisans who waged a revolutionary war against the Arimanus Sovereignty in a conflict now called the Iron Rebellion. Since then, the Dominion has grown into a powerful imperialist power despite numerous conflicts and challenges to its hold on Faylen.

History

During the Age of Colonization, a number of colonies were established on the Faylen Continent, specifically in the Faylen Gulf, by the Arimanus Sovereignty, the Kingdom of Salvone, the Jhaturian Sultanate, and to a lesser extent the Kelldom of Karstrana. As these colonies began to develop and grow, tensions between the various imperial powers seeking control over Faylen erupted into all-out war in a conflict now known as the Dusk War. The Benevolent Coalition won the conflict, leaving most of the Faylen Colonies under control of the Arimanus Sovereignty.

In the aftermath of the Dusk War, a group of frustrated workers, artisans, and laborers in the Faylen Gulf took advantage of the weakened state of the Arimanus Sovereignty to launch a revolutionary conflict. These revolutionaries, lead by Gregor Ferrous, had expected greater freedom and independence after the messy imperial conflict, but found that the more hawkish and regressive Arimanian Dumas had wrestled control of the Sovereignty. Ferrous and his revolutionaries, calling themselves the Iron Rebels, formed an alliance with the Circles of Icunda, a secretive confederacy of Druids and nature-magic wielders who had taken up residence in the forests of Faylen, to defeat the Sovereignty and gain independence for the Faylen Colonies. This conflict, known as the Iron Rebellion, was successful in deposing the authority of the Sovereignty, leaving Gregor Ferrous and his revolutionaries in control of the Gulf, and presumably the rest of the continent.

Following the Iron Rebellion, the Iron Rebels set about creating a new country based on the principles of their revolutionary cause. They envisioned a country that rewarded hard work and labor, rather than heritage and ancestry. They created a semi-democratic federal state that shared power between a central government located at Midset and planned provincial governments that would be established in the other regions of the Faylen Continent. Gregor Ferrous served as the first Iron Lord, the chief executive position of the Iron Dominion.

As the Iron Dominion began to expand beyond the Gulf, tensions arose between the Dominion and the Circles of Icunda. Disagreements over territory, land-use, religious and spiritual beliefs, and resource development broke down into all-out war between the Dominion and the Circles. This conflict, now referred to as Breaking the Circles in the Dominion, was won by the Iron Dominion, who quickly absorbed the former territories of the Circles and forced its Druidic leadership into hiding. After the Breaking, the Dominion asserted itself as the only political power of the Faylen Continent.

Between the Breaking of the Circles and the First Great Hunt, the Dominion continued expanding its territory north beyond the Faylen Gulf into the Northwest Corridor and the Central Highlands. The Arimanus Sovereingty, still seeking retribution for the loss of its colonies, continued to harass the Iron Dominion with minor military expeditions and sponsored privateering along the Western coastline. This period is commonly referred to as Eastern Expansion

As the Iron Dominion continued their efforts at expanding Eastward across the continent, they found Faylen to be highly resistant to settlement and colonization. The combination of dangerous flora and fauna and strange magical phenomena on the continent made protecting the expanding borders of the Dominion costly to the country. In 176 Y.D., the Iron Dominion abandoned its settlement efforts in the Central Highlands in favor of focusing on the settlement of the Northwest Corridor. the Iron Regiment, the main military force of the Iron Dominion, was mobilized to clear the Northwest Corridor of dangerous plants, animals, and any stateless humanoids opposed to Dominion rule. This event is now referred to as the The First Great Hunt

The First Great Hunt was largely a success, leading to the full settlement of the Northwest Corridor. Inspired by the success of the First Great Hunt, the Iron Dominion orchestrated a Second Great Hunt in 193 Y.D., this time with the intent of clearing Chapel Valley, that had previously been inaccessible due to the Vaincrag Mountains. Like its predecessor, the Second Great Hunt successfully cleared Chapel Valley for settlement after the defeat of Undrag, a massive dragon that was discovered inhabiting the Great Dune Sea

In the years following the Second Great Hunt, the Iron Dominion has continued to grow. Discussions are ongoing in the Artisan's Assembly about authorizing a Third Great Hunt for the Central Highlands, but recent tensions between the Dominion and other Imperial powers, and the influx of refugees and migrants in the aftermath of the Idrazian Unification have drawn the Dominion's attention to the outside world. The future of the Dominion rests on a complex web of domestic and foreign political maneuvers.

Territories

The Iron Dominion controls most of the Western half of the Faylen Continent, and lays claim to the The Eastern Wildlands beyond its borders. The territories under Dominion control are divided into provinces, each with their own provincial governments. Currently, the Dominion has control over Midset Province, the Northwest ProvinceChapel Valley Province, and a small but expanding territory of the Central Highlands called the Central Province

Military

The Iron Dominion maintains two main military forces, the Iron Regiment and the Frontier Guard.

The Iron Regiment is a professional military with an army, and navy, and has fought in a number of conflicts against other nations, primarily the Arimanus Sovereignty and the Circles of Icunda. The naval forces of the Iron Regiment are referred to as the Iron Fleet

The Frontier Guard is a less professional military force that is tasked with the policing and defense of the frontier territories of the Dominion.

Foreign Relations

Agriculture & Industry

The Iron Dominion has taken advantage of the abundant natural resources of the Faylen Continent with a robust agriculture and farming base that supports its powerful industrial capacities. Raw materials gathered in the frontier territories are sent back to the Central Gulf to be processed in factories to be traded and sold to other nations around Tellandria.

Private ownership and entrepreneurship are encouraged in the Dominion; very few industries are owned by the state. However, much of the industrial capacity of the Dominion is owned outright by the Iron Barons, a collection of wealthy elites that have secured their economic control through earning the favor of the Iron Lord and the Artisan's Assembly. The Iron Barons have their hands in most industries of the Dominion, especially in the frontier territories.

Trade & Transport

With the exception of the Arimanus Sovereignty, the Iron Dominion has generally had good trade relations with the other nations of Tellandria. Faylen's abundant natural resources have allowed the Dominion to profit greatly from trading its manufactured goods with the Mukan Federation, the Jhaturian Sultanate, the Kelldom of Karstrana, and to a much lesser extent, the Shaped of the Pantheon
