Gaen

History

The Gaens were once a merchant family, buying and selling various goods all up and down the coast. In 3288 MA, they purchased a Barony from Toyuk, the bastard son of King Sorrin I Gilren when he was declared the Count of Toyuk County by his father.   During the Gilren Civil War (3383 MA - 3393 MA), House Gaen fought alongside their Liege lords, the Toyuks, in service of Alnor I Gilren, though they did not distinguish themselves. When Youk IV "Hidrec" came to power and began to wage war against those nations who had taken lands from Youk Kingdom during the civil war, the Gaens fought alongside him against the Jarsokkans.   At the onset of the First Youkan Civil War, the Toyuks planned to betray Queen  Lahrah Gilren and join her younger brother, Lamlou Gilren. Discovering this plot, a younger son of House Gaen came to Youk in secret and told Lahrah. Once Count Toyuk discovered his treachery, he had all of House Gaen put to death, save for the boy who had gone to Youk, though he vowed to see him dead as well. He never had the chance to fulfill his vow. As soon as she received word, the Queen marched on Toyuk and put the Count and his family to death. In recognition of his brave deed and in recompense for his slain family, the young Gaen was made Count of Toyuk County.   During the Hrakken Crusades (3751 mA - 3772 MA), the Gaens fought alongside King Ragnor V Gilren, losing many of their soldiers and several members of the family. They gained no particular honors for their service.   The Gaens were a principle house in the Second Youkan Civil War (3777 MA - 3779 MA), with the heir to the house being the constant companion to Queen Youko II Gilren. When Youko succeeded against her uncle, Balth, she granted her constant companion the title of Duchess, though she did not increase their lands by much.   During the Third Youkan Civil War (3877 MA - 3881 MA), the Gaens fought on the side of Jordyn III Gilren. Duchess Tronde Gaen, granddaughter of Hoswald Gaen, was sent to the Duchy of Magrae to fight the rebels fighting against Magrae. Though she did not ultimately defeat he rebels, her assistance was rewarded with lands from the Queen's own County.   When Jordyn IV Gilren crowned herself in opposition to her twin sister, Jaedyn Gilren in 3912 MA, the head of House Gaen was in Youk and was thus executed under the suspiscion that he had conspired with the other lords present when Queen took the city. To this day, the Gaens deny he had any involvement, and revile Jaedyn as needlessly ruthless.   In 4024 MA, Duke Gaen married a Tiger Princess of Jarsokka and gave him a son the following year. This son, Hoswen Gaen took up his father's titles and position after he died fighting in the Demon War. He is now betrothed to Laener Caenar, the daughter of Baroness Quori Caenar, cousin to Duchess Jordyn Yuon of Dao and fourth cousin once removed of Queen Jordyn X Gilren.

Demography and Population

Hoswen Gaen is the current leader of his house, though he is advised and aided by his mother, a Tiger Princess of Jarsokka. He as yet has no children and has been betrothed to Laener Caenar.

The Gaens hold a large County, consisting of nine villages and the city of Toyuk. This County makes up the entirety of the Duchy of Toyuk and is a large section of the border with Jarsokka.
