Volgrim
They asked me for a statue of the general who died
A sword raised in his iron fist and a warhorse sat astride
And though I knew they'd try me for what I did decide
I stuck a hammer in his fist and an anvil by his side
And it's sparks a-flying, passion strong
I am the blacksmith singing
The hammer and the anvil song - Excerpt from a common work shanty in Volgrim
Named after the great dwarven general Volgrim Ironfoot, the city of Volgrim rests in the mountains of Velant's Ivory Coast. The city is often referred to as the singing city, as the work shanties sung by the miners and denizens of the underground can be heard throughout most hours of the day as they toil away.
Volgrim is renowned for its exportation of many valuable ores, stone and minerals, including adamantine and Veridium. Due to this fact and the tireless work ethic of many of its dwarven citizens, the city has become one of the wealthiest on Solanus in recent years. Prior to the formation of the Kingdom of Velant, entry into the city by outsiders was forbidden except under special circumstances, such as providing refuge or aid to those who needed it. However, the dwarves of Volgrim quickly decided to open up friendly relationships with and eventually join the kingdom after they realized the knowledge provided by Velentians could triple their production and effiency. The chain elevators and loading docks to the underground river that runs through Volgrim are both examples of the technological aid the kingdom has provided to the city over the years.
The city itself is split into layered sections that descend deeper into the hollowed out mountain in which it resides, with the interior featuring extravagant masonry. The expansion of the city shows in the mine design as well as the appearance that, once a section of the mine is hollowed out, the city slowly seems to expand downwards; using the now exhausted mining tunnels and quarries as real-estate.
While the city relies on The Justicars for law-enforcement, Volgrim is governed by the Ironfoot Council, a group of representatives usually comprised of members from the wealthiest dwarven houses. The council handles logistical and municipal affairs, while also maintaining close communication with the Velantian officials in Rimora.
Volgrim supplies its commodities to many parts of Western Arkos, including the Oreion Inquisition and recently the Crescent Empire in order to assist in the rebuilding of Imperia. The city has close relations with the Roame Trading Company, whose ships they use for much of their exportation.
