Elise
Elise , Sister
When Elise was still a child her father took her to the local temple of Liandra and gave her into the care of the priestess serving there. Food was scarce and Elise was one mouth too many. At first, she cried but the priestess gave her a home and a purpose. Elise dedicated her life to Liandra acting as a midwife for the local community.
When the head of her order, Father Aldwin, set up a new abbey on an island in the middle of The River Oswine he sent out a request for priests and priestesses from the rural temples. Elise was among the blessed few chosen and set out for Arshen. When she arrived she was worried it would be too isolated but they soon received visitors from the mainland ferried across by the boatmen that plied the river. There were plenty of women in need of Elise's skill and she found herself busy.

“Dren did his best,” Avani continued as she settled down, “but I could easily give him the slip. I was mean to him, but he’s always been there. I liked to walk around the town and sit by the wharf and watch the boats. Have you travelled far in your life?”
“No,” Elise said cradling the baby. “My parents gave me to the temple at a young age. I grew up in a small town along the river towards Dragsmund.”
“Your mother gave you away?”
“They were poor. I remember little, a farm in the forest, brothers and sisters. It was a hard life. I remember being hungry a lot and then my father woke me one morning and carried me to his horse. My siblings were all asleep, but I can still see my mother crying in the doorway. He took me to the town and handed me over to the priestess in the temple.”
“Did you ever see them again?”
“No, there was a famine shortly after and as always, a plague followed. By the time I was your age, there was hardly anyone left in the village, just empty homes.” Elise could see the fallen timbers of the cabin, the trees reclaiming the land and the small graveyard where her parents were buried.
“What happened then? Did you come to Arshen?”
“Without people to tend to, the temple was no longer needed and then your father came to the throne and your mother established a convent on the river, just to the north of Arshen. She wanted priests of Liandra from remote areas to come and live there, and they chose me.”
“Do you like it there?”
“I do. I miss my sisters and the few brothers that live with us. My job was just like this. I would look after women about to give birth. They’d come to stay with us, and I’d help them bring their child into the world.”
“You were like their mother.”
“No,” Elise laughed. “I’m a midwife, although I was often called granny.”
Avani smiled and gripped Elise’s hand. “You can be his grandmother.”
