Red Fang Chapter 10
Elise could feel people watching her as she walked down the road and into the town. They peered at her from windows and doorways, stopping what they were doing to stare at her. At first, Elise smiled back, but she soon grew uncomfortable with the attention. The city of Arshen was where the doorway to Liandra’s Hall was located. It was the centre of the Religion and home to the temple dedicated to her worship. A priestess of the Goddess should have been an everyday sight and not worthy of the whispered conversations and open pointing.
Elise did her best to shake it off. This was her first opportunity to leave the castle since she had arrived and despite her fears for Avani, there was a part of her excited about seeing the town. Years on the island had left her isolated from the world, and she was desperate to see what had changed. The impoverished village that she had briefly passed through a decade ago had been replaced with a bustling town that filled the land between the castle and the river. The houses that lined the busy street were larger and better constructed than the hovels she remembered. A few even had glass in the windows and Elise traced her fingers over the smooth panes, marvelling at the wondrous material. The abbey had a window of stained glass, mottled, and locally made, but she was sure this was a sheet of the famed Jennerian glass, hauled up from the desert that lay to the south of the mountains. If you'd like to read this as an ebook or paperback, please follow the links.
