Red Fang Chapter 33

“We have to go now,” Dren said pulling his cloak tight and holding it in place with a hand on his chest.

“Not too soon,” Elise warned.   “Will he be there?” Avani asked giving the empty crib one last look.   “Don’t worry, he’ll be waiting for us,” Elise said and shifted the bag underneath her cloak. Avani was the only one not carrying anything.   “We have to go, now,” Dren whispered harshly as he paced back and forth by the door.   “Okay, you lead the way,” Elise commanded, and Dren opened the door. He set off at a fast pace and was already at the stairs before Elise and Avani had left the room. “Wait for us, Dren.”   Elise took Avani’s hand and helped her down the stairs to find Dren waiting impatiently at the bottom with his hand on the latch.   “Are you sure they won’t stop you?” Elise asked stopping Dren before he opened the door. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest and was sure they would be found out.

The Thousand Lakes
Nestled in the shadow of the Intraana mountain range is a vast land of marsh and forest. Rivers pour in from both the north and south flooding the region until it's more lake than land and yet it is home to more life than any outsider could imagine. Hidden among the reed beds are villages and farms, not all sited on dry land, some float. The villages of the marsh elves drift with the seasons, following the migrations of birds and fish, ignored by the humans as long as they don't get too close. A human king claims dominion and is ready to shed blood to prove it, not his but those of his men, marching them into the swamp to kill and needlessly die. But there are still places where people can hide from tyrants and create homes and communities of their own.
