Red Fang Chapter 34

Samuel took a swig from the bottle and tried not to grimace at the foul spirit within. He’d drunk worst but not out of choice. The man next to him accepted the bottle gratefully but looked to the guard officer for permission before taking a drink.

“Go on, but don’t tell anyone,” the officer said, and the soldier grinned before taking a deep slug.   It was hot in the little room and sweat ran down Samuel’s back. He unclenched his hand and deliberately moved it away from the handle of his axe. He was almost on the tips of his toes, ready to launch into action at the first sign of trouble. All it would take for his axe to slip from the belt loop was a shout from Leon and he would be swinging it at the soldiers.   “Master Dwarf, I asked you how old your company is?”   Samuel tore his gaze from the dungeon door to find the men all watching him, waiting for him to answer.   Samuel coughed. “Sorry, just thinking how terrible that rotgut is.”   “Not my fault,” the gaoler said joining in with the laughter. “I get it from the kitchen, part of my pay. If you want to complain, find the head cook.”   “I understand that some of the mercenary companies have been around for more than a hundred years,” the officer said sounding slightly annoyed at having to repeat himself.

The Thousand Lakes
Nestled in the shadow of the Intraana mountain range is a vast land of marsh and forest. Rivers pour in from both the north and south flooding the region until it's more lake than land and yet it is home to more life than any outsider could imagine. Hidden among the reed beds are villages and farms, not all sited on dry land, some float. The villages of the marsh elves drift with the seasons, following the migrations of birds and fish, ignored by the humans as long as they don't get too close. A human king claims dominion and is ready to shed blood to prove it, not his but those of his men, marching them into the swamp to kill and needlessly die. But there are still places where people can hide from tyrants and create homes and communities of their own.
