Red Fang Chapter 25

Elise woke up with a start to find the fire running low, and the room dark and cold. She wrapped the blanket around herself and crawled over to the fire to place a few logs on.

“That should warm us up soon,” Elise muttered as she turned to slip back under her blanket but stopped when she saw the covers on Avani’s bed were thrown back and that she was gone.   “Avani?” Elise said softly not wanting to wake the baby. There was no reply, so she peered into the small side room, but she wasn’t there either. When Elise noticed the baby’s crib was empty, she ran to the door and threw it open.  Dren, wake up,” Elise said as she ran into the hallway, but he was snoring loudly in his chair and refused to be woken despite Elise shaking his shoulder.   The click of a latch downstairs pricked Elise’s ears, and she ran down the stairs as quickly as her stiff legs would take her. The courtyard was covered in a layer of frost and crunched under her bare feet as she ran outside. Dawn was still a few hours away, and the castle was quiet and still.

The Thousand Lakes
Nestled in the shadow of the Intraana mountain range is a vast land of marsh and forest. Rivers pour in from both the north and south flooding the region until it's more lake than land and yet it is home to more life than any outsider could imagine. Hidden among the reed beds are villages and farms, not all sited on dry land, some float. The villages of the marsh elves drift with the seasons, following the migrations of birds and fish, ignored by the humans as long as they don't get too close. A human king claims dominion and is ready to shed blood to prove it, not his but those of his men, marching them into the swamp to kill and needlessly die. But there are still places where people can hide from tyrants and create homes and communities of their own.
