Irondeep

Summary and history

Irondeep is a small city of Rock Gnomes that is a located inside a deep cavern within the Irondeep Mountain Range . This city is as ancient as they come, the vast majorit of Rock Gnomes hid here during the Age of Chaos and as such have grown to be very reclusive people. Many Rock Gnomes were deathly afraid of the outside world, believing that going to the surface would bring about the destruction of the city.

In recent decades, Irondeep had started allowing nobles or high ranking representatives of other cities to visit for diplomatic purposes. This was due to the progressive King Theo Mountgnomery . The Royal Family disagreed and conspired against and ultimately killed him. When his son Terrence Mountgnomery took over as King, the people of Irondeep split into two factions;
  1. those that supported the Royal Family and Irondeep's isolation
  2. those that supported the Jade Syndicate and Irondeep's liberation

A bloody civil war between the two factions took thousands of lives, until The Order of the Keepers helped orchestrate a surprise assault/infiltration that would bring down Terrence Mountgnomery and instate the leader of the Jade Syndicate King Arthur Mountgnomery as King.
The airship slows as you approach the city, and the pilot once again uses intricate machinery to bring the ship to a halt as you dock. He removes the Raw Blue Crystals he used to power the ship from the console and throws them overboard. He then gives you a friendly wave and motions to the mechanical stairs that start to deploy. Welcome to Irondeep.

The Land

In the center of a large hollow cavern with gigantic protruding stalactites and stalagmites is a flat plateau of rock on which sits the small gnomish city of Irondeep. The gnomes live off of mushroom farms (both natural and synthetic) and various stews and soups. They also grow some vegetables and their own cheese.

The People

The people of Irondeep are all Rock Gnomes. A large portion of the population are nobles, engineers, ore and crystal miners, and mushroom farmers (scientists). There are also many academics that study the arcane arts as well as engineering at the University of Irondeep. Some like Twitch Twiddles are talented at combining magic and engineering, creating intricate magical items.

A few hundred people from various races and backgrounds have moved to Irondeep after its liberation. You can now find some Halflings, Dwarves, Humans and even a small number of Elves.

The Leadership

The Irondeep royal family previously lead the city and implemented many policies. King Terrence Mountgnomery was responsible for important decisions, while the King's advisor Lambell Mountgnomery handled most of the day to day activities. On a lesser scale, the rest of the Royal Family could also issue orders if they wished to, though the King or his advisor had veto power.   The Jade Syndicate successfully executed a coup with The Order of the Keepers help. King Arthur Mountgnomery is now the leader of the city. Many of the laws have since relaxed, with many of the anti-common laws being abolished completely.

Law & Defence

The Gnomish Allied Forces enforces the various laws of Irondeep, with nearly 1000 soldiers residing in Irondeep. The high number of soldiers for a small and remote city is due to Terrence Mountgnomery 's paranoia about surface attacks.

Since access from the rest of the world is limited to Airship travel, the city itself doesn't have much use for defensive reinforcements like walls or other typical city defenses.

Criminals

After the civil war, supporting the Jade Syndicate was no longer considered illegal, and therefore hundreds of jailed syndicate members were released. Members of the Royal Family who were outwardly violent towards the syndicate or its supporters were imprisoned afterwards. Terrence Mountgnomery is currently detained in the Irondeep Dungeons.

Civil war aside, Irondeep does not see much criminal activity. This is due to Royal Laws preferring exile to imprisonment. Surviving in the depths of the Irondeep Mountain Range is difficult, and those that are exiled are rumored to become a feral Deep Gnome , which dissuades most criminals.

Trade

After the liberation of Irondeep, citizens were given permission to trade with the outside world for the very first time. Trade routes were established with Ridgefell , Norbury and Myrefall. Several Sorus Airships locations were opened in various cities throughout Sorus afterwards.

The city is now more active than ever, with a high number of visitors taking vacation to the mysterious city. This has stimulated the economy, and has opened up new business ventures such as the new Irondeep Tours service provided by the city.

Corrupted Deep Gnomes

After the events of the civil war (see Jade Syndicate for more details), the Corrupted Deep Gnomes continued to attack the city. Concentrated efforts were required to beat the corrupted back into the old mines were the Jade Syndicate once hid out. The Wayfolk was contracted to find a solution to the corrupted problem. Unable to find the source of the corruption, the Wayfolk opted for caving in the old mine tunnels. The odd corrupted manages to find its way out every so often, but the cave-in seems to be a good temporary solution.
