King Calimaco Bladesong (a.k.a. The Rich, The Enlightened)
Mental characteristics
Personal history
The son of King Arald III Bladesong seethed at his father's ineptitude at making the Kingdom prosper, and ultimately killed him while dueling for the throne. Some Marcher relatives sought vengeance and some Grandees questioned the duel's regularity, but overall The Council, relieved by the end of the drunkard's rule, endorsed his killer's.
Heartened, new King Calimaco stepped back from dueling himself to become a generous patron of the martial arts. Under his reign, jousting became the official Marcher justice system. Many of The South's elite duelists died during an assault on mutinying prisoners at Cuervo Keep; Calimaco led a public campaign to save the endangered regional tradition.
However, his spendings left him too poor to bail out the Coastal industries during the Crab Bubble Burst of 949, and he angrily repressed the ensuing protests. Realizing how that made him look, he worked on his reputation by protecting the region from krakens and pirates; and he swore never to be caught unprepared again.
Calimaco raised cruel taxes to refill the Treasury. He modernized the Kingdom and made it wealthy, even acquired a profitable vineyard; but rumours painted him as paranoid, as he had tripled Palace security from fear of a plot from the Patricians, or his coldly ambitious husband, or his heir.
To cement his reputation once and for all, he searched for the legendary Scepter of Alma Bladesong, said to guarantee a golden age for rulers true of heart. Calimaco believed that “the worthy shall rise”, and in making one's own luck: perceiving no sign from the Ninth, he spent over a year mapping the maze-like reliquary, overcoming through perseverance what was meant as a test of faith.
King Calimaco 'the Rich' -in money, glory and power- did rule over a golden age, asserting control over his free-spirited nobles. At the end of his reign he had the Scepter hidden back in its reliquary, so as to preserve its mystique.
