Samuel

Samuel

Samuel was born in Dragsmund as part of the dwarven diaspora that has made that city home. He wasn't lucky enough to have been born in the shadow of the Heaven's Spire, nor in one of the many burrows that tunnel into The Blue Mountains. All his life has been spent above ground and that's how he likes it. He was born among the humans and would more than likely die among them.   He spent his early years working odd jobs in Dragsmund, mostly around the slaughter yards, but he knew soon enough that the life wasn't for him. Others might be content to slave away in one of the many factories that feed the insatiable hunger of Dragsmund, but Samuel wasn't one of them. He wanted adventure, and he knew where to find it.   The mercenary companies held an open day every year in the stockyards surrounded by pens full of cattle and sheep. Each company set up a tent and competed with each other to attract the best recruits. The alcohol flowed easily, and the air ran with the clash of blunted weapons and startled cows. Samuel took the coin and joined up with The Red Fang.   Back when he joined, the Fang had a sizable dwarven cohort, enough that they were treated with respect and allowed their customs, but as the years progressed, more of them left until Samuel was the only one left. He held on only because of a young Human that he took under his wing.   Toli was only a child when his brother Cosi signed up, too young to take to the field but with no other family to care for him the boy joined the company. Samuel took him under his wing and grew to care for him. The boy grew quickly and proved to be adept at leading men. When the company decided to trust Toli with a small fang of his own, Samuel became his sergeant and did his best to keep him out of trouble.   The men of the fang are the only family left to him, and Samuel will do anything to protect them.
If any of those bastards had to spend a day in my boots, they wouldn't make it past lunchtime.

When his brothers fell that night in the marsh, Samuel was spared. Despite a serious injury to his leg, he crawled away through the waters. For the next month, he lived out among the reeds, unsure what to do with his life. He eventually turned his back on The Thousand Lakes and leave, but rather than head for Dragsmund, he turned to the east and the High Plain.   It took him a month, but he eventually reached the town of Windridge on the edge of the Garan Sea. From there, he travelled to Nesher, where he found employment on the boats. First with the night-soil barge, but later with cargo ships supplying the legion garrisons along the coast.   For a while, he found a new life, but his past soon caught up with him. Unable to forgive himself for abandoning his brothers, he turned to alcohol and spiralled out of control. The end would have come quickly if not for the intervention of Mother Olo, who took pity on the dwarf and helped him find peace.   When it came time for Zini'la to leave Nesher, Mother Olo asked Samuel to accompany her and do what he could to protect her. When she told him of their destination, he almost refused, but he knew he couldn't avoid returning to the marsh forever.
