Red Fang Chapter 17
The children rode in the back of the waggon along with a few of the adults unable to keep up the steady pace, leaving the rest of the group to trudge behind in weary silence. Toli and his nine men spread out along the road, keeping an eye on the thickets on either side of the trail. Sunrise was still a few hours away, but the clouds had moved on, leaving the moonlight to cast a thin veil upon the land.
Toli focused on everything outside of himself, straining his eyes to catch a glimpse of Leon and Leith as they ranged ahead, turning at the slightest sound in the undergrowth. He wanted desperately to avoid thinking about Avani, but his mind kept switching between her and the Goddess and the feeling that he was betraying both of them. “I don’t know how he can see anything in this light,” Samuel said. “What?” Toli asked, surprised to find the Dwarf at his side. For a moment he’d been lost some place else, his walking automatic. “The pointy-eared fella in the front.” “Marsh Elves have better eyesight than we do, especially in the dark. Leon told me it was a gift from their God so they could avoid humans.”If you'd like to read this as an ebook or paperback, please follow the links.
