Red Fang Chapter 14
Toli led the small group as they crossed the square, his long stride setting the pace. It was quiet for the most part with the few locals that remained staying out of sight, but as they reached halfway, the doors to the temple swung open and a gaggle of the red heart priests emerged. One of them carried a bell at his side and started swinging his arm in big arcs. Toli grimaced at the sharp sound as it echoed around the square, disturbing pigeons, and eliciting a wince from more than a few of the people gathered, including several of the soldiers tasked with keeping desperate townsfolk away from the temple.
“You’d best walk next to me.” Boris dragged Boden back, so that he was walking in his shadow. “They always sound out of tune to me,” Samuel said. “You’d think they could make bells that sound right. If you’re going to lug them across the swamp, you’d want to know they weren’t broken.” “They don’t bother me,” Seagar said. “You like the sound because your soul has grown attuned to it,” Boden explained. “How’s that?” Samuel asked. “Your soul is a gift from the gods. It is a part of them they give back to the world,” Boden said, staring up at the blackened windows of the temple. “Liandra gave my soul to me. If you were born in The Thousand Lakes, then it is likely you send your prayers to the Goddess, but your soul may belong to another.”If you'd like to read this as an ebook or paperback, please follow the links.
