Red Fang Chapter 20

Boris’s head poked out over the tall ferns, keeping an eye on the road. Occasionally, a hand would rise to shove a bit of dried meat into his mouth or scratch his nose, but his eyes never strayed far from the soldiers and the hills on either side. The sun had set behind them, and the sky was awash with red and pink clouds.

“Someone’s coming,” Boris said, and a succession of heads popped up around him until all of them were peering out over the ferns. The soldiers were still there, lined up across the road, but they had relaxed their stance as time dragged on. Just when it seemed to everyone that they were in for a long wait, a second group of riders cantered along the road from the direction of the town and came to a stop alongside the others.   “Who’s this then?” Samuel said as he got to his feet and stretched his back. He let out a loud groan, disturbing a crow that had been sitting on a branch watching them. The bird spread its wings and glided across the trail into the dark woods.   “Well, it’s not the Emperor, is it?” Dallon said as he stood up, scratching at his leg. “I think something bit me.”   Toli was first out on the road, standing on his own while his men drifted from the trees. Davey came out from behind a bush, lacing up his trousers.   “We’re not here to fight, remember so look less menacing,” Toli said.   Davey sat down in the path and let his legs splay out in front of him. Samuel stalked toward the youth, but Davey got to his feet before the Dwarf could kick him.

The Thousand Lakes
Nestled in the shadow of the Intraana mountain range is a vast land of marsh and forest. Rivers pour in from both the north and south flooding the region until it's more lake than land and yet it is home to more life than any outsider could imagine. Hidden among the reed beds are villages and farms, not all sited on dry land, some float. The villages of the marsh elves drift with the seasons, following the migrations of birds and fish, ignored by the humans as long as they don't get too close. A human king claims dominion and is ready to shed blood to prove it, not his but those of his men, marching them into the swamp to kill and needlessly die. But there are still places where people can hide from tyrants and create homes and communities of their own.
