Red Fang Chapter 27

Errol took his time returning to the men, slowed by his reluctance to break the news and deal with the aftermath. War was easy, he gave orders and people followed them, but peacetime was always trouble. By the time he approached the stables, he could already hear the drunken arguing. A fistfight fizzled out, the pugilists calling a truce when Errol walked past, breaking off to follow him into the brewer’s yard.

His entry caught Samuel’s attention, and he nudged Dallon as he got to his feet.   “Where’s Toli?” Ravin called out from amidst a cluster of his followers. “His men are here, but where is he? Has Barrow’s pet abandoned his post already?” the surrounding men broke into laughter, but they were the only ones among the assembled company to do so.   “You’ll see him soon enough, right before he shoves his boot up your arse!” Davey’s shout pulled Boris out of his drunken daze.   “Davey,” Boris whispered loudly as he pulled at the tall youth’s arm. “It might be better to leave them alone.”   “No chance.” Davey made a rude gesture at Ravin and two of his men shot up from their bench. They made it three yards before Seagar got up to meet them, with a long curved knife in his hand.   “Seagar,” Leith said running forward to stop him from attacking Ravin and his men. “Things are tense enough without you cutting people.”

The Thousand Lakes
Nestled in the shadow of the Intraana mountain range is a vast land of marsh and forest. Rivers pour in from both the north and south flooding the region until it's more lake than land and yet it is home to more life than any outsider could imagine. Hidden among the reed beds are villages and farms, not all sited on dry land, some float. The villages of the marsh elves drift with the seasons, following the migrations of birds and fish, ignored by the humans as long as they don't get too close. A human king claims dominion and is ready to shed blood to prove it, not his but those of his men, marching them into the swamp to kill and needlessly die. But there are still places where people can hide from tyrants and create homes and communities of their own.
