Language Rankings by Number of Speakers

Below is a list of all living languages in order from most to least spoken. Numbers are based on a world population of approximately 158 million and represent census data compiled from all nations where a language holds demographic significance. With over 20 million speakers, the breakaway leader in the rankings is Vairuvand, lingua franca of the Uvan Empire and its adjacent lands; the second most spoken world language, Draksi, boasts just under 15 million speakers. The least widespread language in the world is Fiit, bearing an endangered status with only 5000 or fewer native speakers left.   Detailed breakdowns of speakers by nation may be found under individual language descriptions.   There are slightly more cultural groups in Taharjin's Flame than there are languages, but for the most part, a strong connection is assumed between ethnicity and mother tongue, and so this list doubles as a robust census for ethnically as well as linguistically defined groups.
