Fiend

Fiends are a category of creatures native to the Lower Planes: devils, demons, and other generally evil beings. Some labor under the leadership of archdevils and demon princes. Evil priests and mages sometimes summon fiends to the Material Plane to do their bidding. However, in Azimuth, they are most known as the soldiers of the armies used by Esturk, The World's End.   Fiends can be separated into two general groups; Demons and Devils. Though some fiends can be found elsewhere, both demons and devils are sourced largely from demiplanes adjacent to Nadiria, the Plane of Darkness. These planes are The Hells (Devils) and The Abyss (Demons).

Description

General Characteristics

Esturk, The World’s End, has historically relied largely on demon forces in his attacks on Azimuth. Demons need a strong anchoring presence to allow them to remain in the Material Plane, and Esturk has been this anchor in The Great War and the Tarterian War.   Aside from Esturk, a strong source of demonic corruption could allow demons to subsist, like in the Demons' Blood Marshes or Keeleon Castle. A strong enough demon could also anchor smaller demons, as could a magical effect designed to do so, such as a spell circle.   Fiends, especially Devils, operate on a hierarchy of power. It is unknown how this hierarchy relates to Esturk, or why some Devils seem aligned with him and others work against him.

Demonblood and Demonoil

When a Demon is killed in the Material Plane, its body decays rapidly into a black ichor, commonly referred to as demonblood. While this material has a high potential to stain whatever it comes into contact with, in most cases the amount is small enough to eventually fully dissipate.   In large quantities, usually only in cases of prolonged demonic presence or where many demons were slain at once, the volume of demonblood can be such that even as some dissipates, the residual material may stabilize into Demonoil. Demonoil is a sticky, adherent substance that seemingly resembles bile or thick tar. The full properties of Demonoil are not known, but it is believed that it is highly corruptive and dangerous.

History

The Third Age: The Age of Zenethia
At the end of the Third Age, Esturk, The World's End, attacked Azimuth with a vast army of demons, starting the Great War. The war lasted for a century, bringing vast destruction and death to the world. Demons were spread to nearly every corner of Azimuth over the course of the war.   At the end of the Great War was the Battle of the Demons' Blood Marshes. Demons in their thousands met Azimuth's armies on the beaches of the wildlands and fought for the life of the world for days. So great was the amount of demon blood spilled that the Demons' Blood Marshes became a permanent place of demonic corruption.
The Fourth Age: The Age of Shadow
4A 995
At some point before 4A 995, Esturk, The World's End, began to stir in the world. Once he began to awake, Esturk started affecting the lands around him with corruption and deceipt, and when he was strong enough to send demons forth once more, start the Tarterian War. Over the course of the fighting, many settlements would be sacked and the armies of Keeleon would be defeated. Great destruction occured across Tarteria, from the Orichalcum Peninsula to Hezrou Pass.   In 4A 995, the Zenethian Children battled a Night Hag at Loch Tower to rescue sevearl kidnapped children and Prince Hector. The Night Hag was working with Psaro the Manslayer, searching for the Zenethian Children using bloodletting and a spell circle.   In 4A 995, the Zenethian Heroes fought against several Chain Devils within the World Tree. The Chain Devils embodied the fears of the group, and one killed Gruknock, Captain of Burland, during the fighting.   Later in 4A 995, the Heroes sailed to Port Haville. The city had been sacked as part of the Tarterian War, and demons still remained within. They fought against several Dretch and a Vrock. A Bebilith killed Trip in the fighting, and she was recurrected by Leo.   In southern Tarteria, the Heroes ventured to Fire Spire Sands and Ruin's Temple. There, they fought against several Dretch, Desert Devils, and Babau.   4A 996
In 4A 996, the Heroes returned to Tarteria and ventured to Aktempto. The city was patrolled by Dretch, Chasme, and Red Abishai, and there were several Hezrou near the mine entrance. The demon in charge of them all was a Glabrezu. Though she was captured, Petra D'Silva tricked the Glabrezu into leading the Heroes to Esturk, The World's End.
The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings
5A 178
On 23 Sedaena 5A 178, Luyos and Krummer battled against a possessed Daelee at the Fane of Black Hematite, where a Karakura had been trapped. After rescuing Daelee, the three of them defeated and killed the Karakura.   5A 352
On 31 Madaet 5A 352, Romulus and Romsca fought a Maw Demon that emerged from the sewers in the Darksteel Foundry in Porgorag.   When the Campaign Two party visited the Hero Hunters Facility in Porgorag in 5A 352, there were several statues of creatures in the courtyard. One of these statues was of a Bebelith.   On 2 Adroth 5A 352, the Campaign Two party encountered several Maw Demons in the storage manor of the Hero Hunters Facility in Porgorag. The party learned that the Maw Demons were travelling throughout the city's sewers.   On 3 Adroth 5A 352, the Campaign Two party reached the sunken Spring of the Natant Yew beneath Porgorag. Inside, they fought several Maw Demons and prevented the completion of a spell circle being cast by a pair of Bulezau.
